Anyone know why my water pump wheel would be loose? I tried to tighten the allen bolt going from the wheel to the impeller shaft but it still is loose and wobbles. Any info would be great!

You might need some new bushings/bearings in the pump itself. Check the whole assembly before you strip the threads in the pulley. |

If it wobbled too long it will destroy the pulley i.d.

Chris,
Are you sure it's loose and not just bent? |

I'm pretty sure its just the attachment at the pulley. I had the whole assembely off last week... the shaft coming from the impeller turned fine. There seems to be a key on that shaft where the pulley is loose.
The allen bolt worked for a while, its better than it was, but it still wobbles. I need to get some pics up but will be on the road till tuesday. |

I had a similar problem on my '80 with a Sherwood pump. For whatever reason the pulley became loose on the pump shaft and like Hotboat said the bore of the pulley became egg shaped. You could not keep it tight. I tried to locate a replacement pulley through the normal boat places but everyone wanted to sell me a whole pump assembly. I finally went to Erie Bearing and bought a stamped pulley similar to the original for $13.00. The only modification required was to face the hub back about 1/16 inch in order to allow the snap ring to fit. Been fine for about eight seasons.
