Another day, another rippin' footset with my bro's Willie and Andy. A day like yesterday is just a mind blower for me, and really a testament to willingness and good coaching. Forward trick runs, backwards, front wakes, and now trying back to fronts on the shoes, I am sooooo stoked. My barefoot game has so many dimensions to it, it is really fun now (like it wasn't fun before)....
Barefooting is Freakin' a BLAST! |

You guys make it look so easy.
My barefoot beginning is on hold at the moment. In preparation for Barefooting I have being putting in lots of extra work at the gym. Picked up a rib cartlidge injury and then last week I twisted my good knee some how. Hope I can get things right in the next few weeks. |

question..I´m trying to start with the short line to the boom, its a BI handle say 4 foot long or so attached to the tip of the boom. I wrapped my feet forward across the rope..put the handle in the hips..and boat starts..but once it get some speed I start bouncing hard and can´t get to hold...do I need to start slowly and sit down and then speed up the boat?

Like everything else in barefooting, it's going to take a few tries to figure it out. I'm sure you'll get it soon.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jML7xg7368M&feature=channel I don't know why, but none of these Livestrong Youtube links have sound. |

Kapla:
Everybody learning seems to go thru the "bounce" stage. I got bounced off the rope the first 10 times I tried it. I had the driver go faster, slower, it didn't seem to matter. Eventually it stopped. When the boat starts, arch your back, and be real stiff (0-12MPH) once you start to plane, sit up and ride your butt (12-20 MPH). Take your feet off the rope as soon as you can, I think that will help with the bouncing. Ride your butt, feet off the rope 'til you are at barefoot speed which would be 34 to 36 MPH for you. Gently plant your feet on the water with them as close to your butt as possible. I learned to get up sitting on a kneeboard to start the first few times I tried it. That helped me on the deep water cuz I knew what to expect once on my feet. In truth, to stop the bouncing is going to be a combination of driver speed, body position, and your experience and practice at it. It will stop, it just takes time. If your driver sees you bounce, tell him to slow it down a few MPH 'til it stops. |

Real nice video to go off of. Paul is so good though, he makes it look toooo easy (I guess that's why he is the pro!). Kapla, your progression from plane, to butt glide, to plane will be slower. I like the pace from which he planes, to sitting up. One big pointer: KEEP THE HANDLE IN TIGHT TO THE WAIST. DO NOT LET IT GET AWAY FROM YOU. The bad of your hand should be at your belt line, touching, with elbow in, tight to the ribs. You will flop all over the place if you don't do this. As always, post some video of your attempts, so we can see. |

Weird, the audio in ALL of those Livestrong videos never work for me. I can hear some sligth scratchy stuff, like spinning a record by hand. I'm not sure it's my computer since I click a related video and I hear them just fine... Here is a shortline video from Lane Bowers |

you will want to plane on the small of your back, not your butt, if you are on your butt you will roll to the sides and onto your face. you will plane easier/bounce much less on the small of your back. slow to medium acceleration is all that is needed while planing, take feet off rope as soon as you plane out, then plant slowly in control and stand up but stay low knees bent.

This is all great advice.
One problem: Equipment. If you do not have a tight fitting suit you won't be able to ride stable on your butt. I always try to get people to wear shorts under their suit which is a step up from just a tight fitting suit. The right equipment makes all of the difference. Tim |

I grew up learning from Siepel. I bought Lane Bowers video instruction a couple of seasons ago. He makes everything easier to learn than the old school ways that I had to learn by. Definitely worth the money! |

Seb, it would'nt hurt (literally) to get some padded shorts to wear under your suit when learning your deep starts.

LOL nice firts run of the year IMO!!! lol after the run we hod some drinks and some stuff to eat..but had to run cause we were mosquitos food...I had like 20 bastards all around the body!!! new suit |

Kap, Keep your feet up on the rope longer during your starts. At that point set up and ride on your ass with your feet on the rope and the handle in your gut. You will be surpirised how easy and comfortable that posotion is. At that point take your feet off and transition to your three point position. This will also be your indication to the driver to slowly increase the boat speed. Or you could keep doing it that way and not worry about having any more little Kapla'a running around.

Another trick is to keep your elbows wide until you three point. They will act as outriggers if you tip to one side.

#1 tip would be get a new driver! Keep going, you'll figure out a bunch of little techniques at this stage to make things smoother. Arms straight during the 3-point. Great pics and video, thanks for sharing.

yep..I kept yelling faster..!!lol they are not used to go that fast I guess..anyway it was the first time in the short line so with some more runs I will get it clean...I was surprised on the tumbleturns..I got it on the firts attemp..but then as driver though I falled he lowered the speed and had to fight to keep going..LOL

Good tips from SN, Tull and HW. Ill add that when you first plant your feet (3-point) youll have a much easier time of it if you bring your heels back closer to your a$$. Leaving them out front makes it much easier to jam in your heels (BAD)... you want them parallel with the water.
Nice job! |

went yesterday after office my frind Lucas and me..little late low light..all the way for nice 10 minutes of footing..first attemp got it all smooth nice long runs perfect..had a little problems in the tumbleturn but after sliding in my back I got to stand again..then had to let go the river was finishing..then I tried to other runs but had some problems in the take off,..some bouncing again..then quitted as I was a little tired and was getting dark and I wanted my friend to give it a try..so he did..and I think we had another footer fan on the way!!! no pics as driving and shootind is quite a task!!
that first run make my day!!! finding nice flat spot is quite a task though..yesterday wind was blowing hard and making it more dificult to find a nice spot... more to come soon!!! |
