If it was plated it's long gone Pete. If I can polish it, maybe I can put a sealer on it. I'd rather find another wheel than go to the expense of plating. I'd rather find the Merc wheel anyway if I can. It's a Correct Craft wheel, but looks like those cheap after market wheels they used to sell at Zayres.

Bruce, Take a magnet to the spokes. I can safely say they are steel and had a cheap chrome plating on them. My 70 Cuda have the same center spoke design and it was starting to rust after only 2 years! It will rust again. It must ether be painted after all the rust is removed or check out my idea with the plater. Looks like the wood look is coming back. |

All the mung cleaned off pretty well. I don't think the spokes were plated, just polished metal and will come back nicely. There's bits of brown coming through the grey, but I don't think the grey will go away. The plastic or rubber is in decent condition. It may need to be painted.

No Don,I think you mean those foam type right? I was refering to old farm tractor wheels from the 40's and 50's, they are made of a hard rubber and due to their age I guess,they make your hands black if not painted.

Gary, When say that you have had good luck with Imron on rubber wheels, are you talking about the type of wheels that were on the 1980 SN? I have a 1980 with the stock black Go Cart Like Wheel and the black rubber needs restored. It is very faded, but still all there. I was going to try to find some rubber treatment or restorer for weatherstripping, but I am thinking that will not work. Have you used Imron on these type of steering wheels? Thanks, Donald |

I agree with Andy, bead blast the spokes,hand sand the rim and paint.I have had good luck with Imron even on rubber wheels. There used to be a book out there on how to restore your wheel,I'll have to do a internet search and see if I can find one. I don't know how you can make the spokes look like chrome,they would have been done before the rim was cast.

Bruce,
Have you tried to do any sanding on the fake wood rim? See what's under the oxidation to see if it will come back. If not, then a mold is needed to overmold new plastic on the metal spokes after re plating. Maybe it will come back and if you have a plating firm in your area, I'd take it in to them. See if there is any possibility that it can be re plated with the plastic rim still on it. Masking off areas that you don't want plated on parts is common practice. Now buffing the metal is a another problem. It's going to be tough but needed. Basically chrome comes out only as shinny as the metal under it. |

Go for it. Hit the bottom of the backside and go from there. I don't think I go with steel wool on the rim though. light wetsand paper? Hard to say without actually seeing it, feeling the grain/dryness.
