As some of you may have heard me say in teh past, I have some interest in someday building a crackerbox type boat, more for recreation/cruising, not racing. Its hard to find info and plans for them, especially on the east coast. Glen-L has plans for what they call a crackerbox, but its really not, its more a scaled down gentlemans racer. I found on the Vintage Race Boat Shop (Wolfeboro NH) website the name of a guy (Harlan Orrin) out in CA that has plans for "real crackerboxes" including plans for this hull.
I spoke with him yesterday...real interesting. His Uncle bought the Mandella boat company in the 50s and Harlan started building wood racing boats then. He built wooden racing boats there and also worked at Rayson Craft and Sanger. He also built and raced his own boats. Now, supposedly retired, he got sucked back into the business and rebuilds vintage racing boats and apparently his specialty is putting wood decks on the old glass ski/drag boats. The vintage race boat shop website is posting one of Harlan's projects (single engine twin screw boat) and some more Harlan history is found on this site. Good stuff. |

That looks like a pretty cool ride. If you are ever in the area in mid July, they have an antique boat show on Keuka Lake in NY that includes a race thats 15-20 miles. In the past there have been some impressive boats show up. "Dancing Bear" a flat bottomed wooden hull race boat from the 60s with a big hemi is here on the lake and I think it goes to FL in the winter. This guy from Maine used to come every year, one year he had a replica gold cup racer with twin Rolls Royce V12s. They are even starting to allow some early glass boats in.

Wow, that's some beautiful woodwork. What I wouldn't give to spend a few weeks with a guy like that!
Out of curiosity Pete, how many of the wooden boat guys that you know(rough %) would welcome passing on what they've learned over the years? Or is that a tough door to get through? |

For more info on these boats you can go to their class web site http://crackerboxracing.net/ their are a large number of these boats stil racing that were built over 30 years ago, most all are wood and will go in excess of 100 mph and are direct drive. Harlan Spends time on a few hot boat web sites and is a very well known builder and inovator in the world of circle boat racing also drag boats. hopefully he will pass on his knowledge as their are fewer and fewer in the world like him. |

The picture of Hot Cinders above is relatively recent. Here is a picture of Hot Cinders from 1963. these bad boys in action...I hate when that happens |
