What about also doing swingouts and tumble-ups? I always do all three starts when I barefoot.

Kapla you mug lair (aussie slang) tumble turns already and you have only just started. Have had my barefoot ambitions on hold temporarily. Had my first slalom and wakeboard run the past weekend. Did not get that aggressive but knee held up well. We camped out at the lake for 3 days it was our Australia Day holiday like US Memorial Day. In our group we now have a couple of younger single skiers now. They have progressed from the kneeboards to 2 skis and now single off the boom. The boom is such a great teaching aid it would have taken much longer for these kids to progress with out it. Should have got one a long time ago

Boom Spray

The spray from the 2001 hull like Hollywood said is harsh. We have the boom setup out the drivers side. Have found the weighting of the boat is very important for the boom height. The boom can not go any further forward on that side as the drivers seat is already as far forward as it can go. We normally have quite a few in the boat so putting it out the drivers side makes it more comfortable for the passengers.

Hoping the higher speeds required for barefooting will get the spray further back. Planning to try it on the passenger side so we can get it further forward the only limiting factor then will be the angle of the clamp on the boom and clearance with the engine cover.

Which is why I went to a 95 SN pylon with less bend (90-97.5) which definitely gives you more room. Mine is available now after switching gears once again to the taller "extended" tow pylon.

So, it's around 20 degrees, and itching to get back on some water. Time for some indoor mental prep. I put together a video of "mostly" me skiing and barefooting, which, I'm extremely sloppy at both. What am I doing wrong and what should I be thinking about fixing before summer? The tumbles, slalom, and particularly back deeps. Is the boat going too fast/slow? Should my feet go down earlier or later? Thanks.

The highlight of this vid is HW, quinner, Tim B, and either PLBC Tim or Harry, (Can't remember ) dropping skis in front of the Sheriff boat at GL. Oh, and Joe's power turn...

How does the straighter pylon help? Any pictures?

I think the freight costs would make the swap uneconomical.

I think I will try Allan's idea of the reverse contour boom if the boom on the other side does not work.

Since there is more clearance behind the pylon you can angle the clamp forward w/o it digging into the motorbox. My camera is kinda dead and most of my pictures are on my desktop which lost it's monitor.

The boat is going way too fast. You should still get some water shooting up your crotch while placing your feet on the surface. Tell the driver to watch you instead of the speedos. Only if you can't breath you're going to slow. Get the feet down by 15 mph and roll up the throttle from there. Do a practice drive w/o a skier to get get a feel for the speed.

Just looked at your video again. (I have to do that kind of thing to get through these cold dreary winter days)

1:18 - 1:25:   Definitely some bonus points for determination
2:10: I'm no expert, but I would say you leaned away just a tad too far
2:16 on: Good footage...never enough video from reunions... especially the skiing parts.

Thanks guys. To be honest, those were the only two times I ever attempted a tumble turn. I was a little disoriented when I made it around without busting my stuff.

Tumble turns have evolved through the decades. When I learned them (1985ish) you did a tumble turn by pulling in an elbow, leaning and flopping onto your back,arms toward the boat, all in one motion and then finished like is done today. Taught myself using John Gillette's book. I lost that book but will have to see if I can dig it up to affirm my recollection.

It has evolved into "sit-and-spin". Seems the old way is more fitting of the title "tumble turn" Naturally, I find the "old way" more honorable/manly, tho I have to confess I don't remember the last time I did one like that.

Thanks Sebastian. I only did the editing because I'm getting very bored in the coldand it's kind fun to tinker. 100 doesn't sound so bad... You really look like you're coming along well. You're at the point where you can start feeling comfortable and pay a little more attention to body position and stuff like that. Good job.

weekend was crappy weather hell very hot..and little rain, saturday was no go so I went to play tennis...boomer I lost!!!!
sunday well it begun raining in the morning..by mid day I decided to go..but when I was almost ready zap it started to rain again....so I stayed at home..men I said I need to hit the waters..so I grabbed the 2 kids and hitted to the marina..it started to rain again..so now should i return home///hhhmmmm no I stay..rain stopped. calles some friend and out we went.....
water was a little choppy tryied a couple of start on the short rope and could not make it...ended up with some bruises on the shoulder and arms due to some little wakes while attempeting to take off...dude I was pissed..
well ended up starting from the boom and then letting go the handle..I was then in my feet..I can do the transition ok..did some tumble turns a very long runs and then had to quit ...I was exhausted!!! but at least it was a nice ride...
Damn its hard to find flat waters near the marina!!!!
still need to practice the short rope take off!!!

Take it from a ol' brokedown barefooter it is not worth it in rough water. I know you now have the footin' fever, but take that time to practice on the porch with a bridle learning your three point and a comfortable toe-hold. Land practice is a must! It will save alot of hard falls.

Seb, I don't think there is a copmetitive or freestyle barefooter out there that does not spend a good portion of his time with a bridle or handle on land going through his routine or run. Good prep and good water will make you the footer you want to be. Oh!, don't forget to stretch.

Well yesterday was the day I decided. The knee has improved but is not 100% but good enough and the season is getting on. Arrived out at the lake to white caps, did not look like a barefoot day. We went right up in the river to find some good water but there was to much debris from recent storms to give it a go so we just mucked around and did a bit of everything. After a great day decided to head back and pack up as it was getting late.

Arrived back to the main basin and ramp and it was glass so on with the new suit and pants. I was nervous getting suited up and felt like I was in one of them blow up sumo wrestler outfits. Not sure if it was the nerves or the struggle getting the gear on but already felt tired.

Gave my driver some basic instructions take it up to 25mph and just hold it there and hopefully might get a good butt glide and three point as the goal for the day. After about the third try was able to get around and butt glide but was wearing a lot of water in getting there. Had left the camera back in the car so not sure what was really happening as the crew had no idea. The driver is a experienced skier but I have only just taught him to drive the boat as my regular drivers (daughters) are overseas. He has never footed either so I was on my own as far as what was happening.

Gave it another three or four attempts but never got a good three point caught my feet or legs a couple of times and was getting tired. It was getting dark so that was it for the day.

Looking forward to my next attempts and will get it on video so I can see what I am doing wrong and get some advice from you guys.

Lewy, were you on the boom or the 5' line? The butt glide and 3-point are very difficult right off the bar because you cant get the handle down to your stomach/hips. Those are best learned on the 5'. I would get on your feet on the bar just to learn the sensation, then once youre comfortable, move to the 5' line.

If you were on the line, then make sure youre arching your back when you come out of the water. Did your crew tell you where the spray was coming from (you or the boat)? As you know, the 2001 is notorious for spray, even with a long boom.

depending on how much you weigh, 25 MPH may be a little slow for a 3-point, unless you have shoe skis on. If you are stable (pull handle down tight to the beltline, ELBOWS IN TO THE BODY) have the driver take it up to 30 and with your heels as close to your but as possible, lightly set your feet on the water. Water may be too soft a 25 for a 3-point.

Tim I was straight off the boom. Getting around to butt glide position but not sure what was happening from there. I worked out what speed to start spinning around from stomach to back/butt and that it was easier to spin if I shortened my legs by bending at the knees. I think I may have been leaving them bent when I was coming up from my back to more of a butt glide and then catching them in the water.
It was all a bit hectic as the spray was very distracting. I need video to see if the spray was coming from me or the boat.

I watched Lanes video again today but he does not really teach the holding onto the bar method he advocates the swing. Forgot about the point and flex though so that mat help me but it probably applies to the 5' handle more. Not sure if the swing works for larger people and dont like the idea of getting caught in the swing and being dragged along.

Roy weigh 195lbs 6'3" you may be right a bit faster may also help to reduce the spray. Will try a couple of extra mph next time. How high should the bar be when using this method. Have found the bar height increases as the water gets harder with the extra speed.
I was hanging on and planned up on stomach then around the waist hip area before spinning which looked close to what Mark Mel was in his videos.

This all shows how important having the video camera is as a teaching aid.

I had about ten attempts at getting up and the body is feeling them all today. The hands and forearms are a bit sore today from hanging on to the bar. Triceps are tender as well.

To save a bit of effort (pulling yourself around wears you out after a few attempts) give a try to starting with your feet forward. Straight off the boom, you can easily do this by putting one of your feet right on the cable and the other foot right on top of that. You will be at a slight angle but you'll still glide fine. Once you start to plane off, slowly pull your feet toward your rear and gently take them off the cable to move to the three point.

footed saturday and sunday..saturday I went to a lake some 20 miles north from home, where the wakeboard tournament were held a couple of month ago..nice place, no boats...only thing I had to ski in a MC..LOL here is the video of the venue.. you can see me and my friend...

sunday no video but it was a complete session..started wakesurfing in my friends luciano brand new malibu wakesetter..wow what a wake...its a tsunami..then i also wakeboarded behind it..and then i footed in my boat....
after that I went for a nap...

Looks like a great place to foot! Nice smooth water

Lots of spray in your face, bring your knees closer together and roll inward a bit. Bring your seat down and Think GLIDE.

I highly reccomend you guys go over to Barefoot Central's website and check out thier newest feature. They now have a Livestream broadcast interviews with todays' persons making an impact in the sport of barefooting and other disciplines. You can ask questions to all. Last night they had the owner of Sanger boats on talking about boats and what the future holds for barefooting and freestyle barefooting. On April 26 @ 8:00E they will have Geno Yauchler. Geno is a popular foiler and will be at the Katy(Houston), TX NAutique Big Dawg Ski Jam hosted at Barefoot Central's compound.
