This one has been debated a little over before

From 2 different sources:

"Head gaskets are not reversible. If you look, you can see this one is marked front. The front side of the gasket blocks off the block to head water passages. This forces the water to flow from the water pump through the block up to the head, and forward to the thermostat. Installing the gasket the wrong way will cause the water to flow straight from the pump to the thermostat, not going through the block and head, resulting in massive overheating. Don't get this wrong."
("performance engine rebuilt")

"Same gasket for either head but one side must be flipped over for proper instalation. Make sure to have "front" marking pointed forward. When properly installed, both tabs will be at the front of the block!"
(skidim)

How did those that rebuilt their engine do it?=

It appears to me that both statements are saying the same thing?

Hotboat: by doing so you end up with the water passages blocked front on one side and blocked on the rear on the other.

Maybe i'm lost in the translation, but by flip I understand turning one face up and other down. Wouldnt "rotated" be a more appropiate term?

Ford 302, 351 Windsor and Cleveland, Chrysler 318 V8
The passenger side head gasket is fitted bead up (right hand drive boats) while the driver's side head gasket is fitted with the bead against the engine block. Head gaskets have the word FRONT on the gasket. Ensure the cylinder head gaskets are fitted with the word FRONT facing towards the FRONT of engine.

maybe this helps Luch?
