Ok 1985 2001 , I got the cutlass bearing out and it is 6" long the one I ordered is 4" long . Can I / Should I use the 4" or send back the 4 " and get a 6">

Dan,
The 4" is fine. Install it flush with the aft end of the strut. The 6" is unusual? |

thanks I will have to wait until tomorrow before I get some threaded bar. Aft end is the end toward the back right?

Yes, towards the prop making the overhung load produced by any radial thrust of the prop less. |
