One item I haven't addressed yet for my up north shop project is a phone line. I know the answer is out there if I do a internet search but I'd rather ask the pros. What type of cable should I run from the house to the shop. It will be buried along with the water supply (pex plastic) and be about 60' long.

You could use 4 conductor which is normally just for phone. If it was me, I'd go CAT5 so it could be used for voice or data line depending on what you decide to do in the long run. Do direct bury also.

At least (2)CAT5 lines, Coax for TV, and a dedicated 120V line for the kegerator, just in case you use up all the power in the shop.

Pete, While you're at it, make sure the conduit you run it in is oversized and leave a fish string in it to pull more later in case you decide to add something. |

Andy,
The shop is getting it's own 200 amp underground service so it's not coming from the house. I added up some FL amps of equipment that may run at the same time figuring two people in the shop (remember I'll need a helper to push my wheel chair) and it came out at about 125 amps. This area also doesn't require hard piping the electric so it's "Romex" going in which sure isn't the greatest for additions/changes. However, there's something like 25-30 outlets of various amps/volts so I hope I've got all the variables covered. Just in case, I've spec'd ether extra 2" pvc conduit or wiring trough from the breaker panel up to the attic for any of the future just in case additions. |

I did some searching and am finding direct burial Cat5e in a PE39 and PE89. What are the "PE" designations? Is that the "icky sticky" you referred to Gary?

The DB Cat5e is the way to go, Pete. I think you are correct Pete. PE actually stands for Polyethylene which is what the individual strands are coated in. The numbers either have to do with the amount of gel compound they flood the jacket with or something to do with the wire size options. I'd have to double check with a supplier to be 100% sure.

Pete,
By the way...why not run PVC conduit for your Cat5e run from the house to the shop? It might save you some headaches in the long run. Ground shifts, roots and burrowing rodents can leave you with a severed wire. I forgot to ask earlier...what's with the comment on the wheelchair. Are you in a wheelchair now or are you planning for the future? I've been in electrical / electronics most of my life. That's what my degree is in (EET). I'm a project manager now and it just so happens we're doing an install down here on the Oklahoma Toll Road upgrading the electronic tolling equipment and we are using Cat5e DB, along with a lot of other wiring, for our install. I was involved with our Parts Inventory Manager on pricing out the project and specifying the wiring so it's a fresh subject in my mind. |

Andy,
It's not a bad idea with the conduit run. I'll consider it but the water run will be below the 4' frost line where the DB will go. I don't feel I'll have a rodent issue and all the soil up there is sand and below the frost line there's not much movement. I was being facetious about the wheel chair. Hopefully I'll never get to that point in my old age. |

Once you have the trench dug, conduit is cheap. Fixing it later for some unknown reason...not so cheap. Just something to keep in mind. Sounds like you're already considering that. I was gonna say, man if you're in a wheelchair doing all the things I see you ding, I'm really impressed! |

Hey Pete I'm back,went to the Keys to visit Dad after the river run. Trouble with the conduit idea is that the conduit gets water in it then your iw wire sits in the water and then goes bad. Yes you can then pull a new one but it will happen in the winter when it's frozen. Lets do Chicago beers,we can then figure something out.
Just thought of something tho,instead of running conduit,consider running that black plastic pipe used for water. Can't think of the name but it comes in a roll and in 1" dia and up. |

I think I'd run plastic conduit, just make sure to duct seal the ends after pulling in the phone wire so as to minimize moisture buildup. |

I did notice a recent project where Charlie used the stuff! Upon commenting, I was told it ws only "temporary" and the permit sign board wasn't going to be up for that long anyway!!!

Ditto on the conduit idea. And use conduit 2x the size recommended for the wire used. The wire will usually twist in the conduit making it almost impossible to pull more wire later if you do not increase the size of the conduit.

Last I knew the Lorain Road garage was doin' just fine without me. Altho I got to admit I did think they would collapse without me to open up..turn on the computers and fire up the Bunn coffee maker. Boy was I ever wrong!
