I can't locate the flud capacity for my 1.1 Borg Warner transmission. Does anyone know how many quarts it takes?
Thanks |

The manual tells you and it's on here in the ref section - BUT that is only the capacity for the box, not the pipes and coolers.
The level on the stick is "hot" and you need to do it before anything runs back in from the pipes or cooler. All in all a fairly crappy arangement, Mr Borg and Mr Warner deserve a kick in the pants for it. Trial and error I'm afraid. I put a mark on the stick for the level when cold, which means you can keep a check on through the season, but it still takes a while to get it right when you change the fluid - I seem to have some mental block that prevents me remembering how much fluid it takes or writing it down anywhere. |

As Tomski says it involves a bit of trial and error....it also will depend on how much of the old fluid you remove. After I use a vacuum pump to get as much fluid as I can out, it seems like a quart and a half is a good starting point to run the engine/trans to temp and check the level quickly after shutting it down (you don't want to overfill). As he mentioned, the transmission cooler and lines should not have time to drain back to refill the transmission before you check on the dipstick. I usually have the motor box up and get to the dipstick right after turning the ignition off....don't know if time is that critical but that's how I do it.

Have '98 GT-40, would love to know what special pump I can purchase to extract transmisson fluid on my own. Anyone have any ideas? It is a very small cavity to get into there. Thanks.

Steve, Nothing special. You use the same method you did to get the oil out of the engine before they put drain hoses on the oil pans!! All the suction pumps you find will come with several sizes of tubing to fit down in tight areas. In a pinch, you can even use your wifes turkey baster with a short length of nylon tubing stuck on the end. |

Buesnob - I use a gallon jug pump with a plastic hose attached to the stem to pump out the tranny fluid. You can get them at a hardware store or beauty supply store (so I hear). They cost about $2.

Thanks so much for the response. I'll keep looking around, at two auto parts stores today and the tubing they had to come with was to large and would not fit into the cavity. Surely dealers at the marina have access or have a special kind of pump to extract..... Maybe I'm thinking too much about this.

Steve - Anything labelled 'Marine' doubles the price, that is why we trade these work-around ideas. There are several ways to skin that cat.

Hey steve note that you have pcm tranny so fluid capacity may vary from the BW one..
In my case I was never able to get more than 1.5 quarts out of it. I´m using a brass suction pump but I hate using it..seals are kind of cheese and it start leaking fluid while using it... Note that placing the clear tube is a key factor to accomplish this task..as if you put to much hose in there the tip will bend up and will suck air instead of fluid!!! I´m about to do that job so I´ll let you know my findings, and some pics of the tools used!!! |
