I was hoping to change the prop shaft in my Higgins from the original 7/8" Dia. to a 1" to be able to get props easier.
I have a shaft log from another Higgins that had a 1" prop shaft. I tried putting that log in this afternoon to find out it is about a degree off from the original, so the center line wont line up with the strut. (the original is around 15 degrees, the replacement is around 16.) The I.S. Dia. of this log is around 1 3/4". The original is only around 1 1/2". I dont think the 1" shaft will have much clearance in the original log so, right now Im thinking that Im probably stuck with using the original 7/8" shaft. Any thoughts or ideas? |

Steve,
Yes, the good boat doc had a similar problem with his Dart. He was constantly grinding brass off his stuffing box. Turns out the good old guys (the ones with the "finish hatchets") in the factory screwed it up - the strut and log angles were different!!! Here's the fix: Figure out how far the front of the log or rear needs to be raised to match the 1 degree difference. Mix up a epoxy with a high strength filler and lay a layer of it on a flat surface with plastic wrap under it. Take the log with plastic wrap under it and press it into the epoxy at the new angle. Let it set up, trim, drill the holes and you will now have a "log adapter wedge". 5200 both sides of the wedge and screw in place. A good method of getting the log in the correct spot is to make a shaft to log spacer. Slip it over the shaft and into the log. Slide the log down the shaft till it's flange is sitting on the inner keel. |

went and actually measured: 1 5/8" O.D. both, log and stuffing box.
(their idea of 1 1/2") I'll toss in a "new" Vulco hose. AT |
