I know this is a correct craft forum, but I would like some opinions on this 84 supra. The interior is in great shape, it's the exterior that needs some work. Will wet sanding bring out the blue in most places to look decent...? Everything except the blue gelcoat are just decals on this model right? Thanks for any help you can provide. I want to make sure im not getting in over my head!

Alec,
Yes, you can wet sand and buff the boat out to a point where it will look better than it came out of the factory. There are several threads on the process but one thread you really need to look at is this one. Andy's (okieboarder) Supra looked worse than yours and take a look at it now!! However, I feel you should be concerning youself with the stringer condition of the boat and not buffing out the oxidation. Read Andy's thread. How are your stringers? Have you checked the engine/prop shaft/strut alignment? |

Great. That's good to hear. A friend of mine told me about the forum and Andy's rebuild, but I couldn't find any "before" pictures.
I haven't been able to check stringers or alignment yet but from what I'm being told, both are in good shape. I'll have to take a look Friday and go from there. I appreciate the help.. |

Alec, Check it out yourself. 99.9% of the people out there selling a boat will tell you they are OK!! As misalingment tells alot. Pictures of the suspected spots on the stringers will help us. |

Alec, good to see you on. Get ready to do some reading. here is a thread on alignment, Done by a transmission pro Eric Lavine.
This will give you a good understanding of how to check the alignment. It's really simple to check, just pop four bolts off that connect the black and silver couplers. In the pic below, you can see how far off the shaft coupler is from the trans. This is from an engine swap, but you get the idea. That would be a good start to see how far off it is. Feel free to post on Andy's thread, I'm sure he'd love to see another Supra guy on the board. |

Alec,
Here's one before and two after pictures. You can get that oxidation out. I'd be concerned more about the stringers, as well. Also, I've been told to stay away from the beast. I never got a clear understanding as to why, but it came from one of the guys that is big into Supras on the Supra forum and wakeboarder.com. The Beast was early in the Supra days and that may have something to do with it. From what I've been told the Sunsport and the Saltare are the ones to get. Lots of room and hulls that produce good wakes, along with plenty of freeboard to load them with weight for surfing, etc. |

Wow. That's great Andy.
You know I have heard similar regarding supras, but never could get a really good reason either. This is one of those boats that won't sit long for the price (unless there's something I'm not seeing , which I'll know Friday). Even though this is my 2nd boat, it's really more like my first in a lot of ways. I plan to keep it for a couple years and then get something a little newer. For the price, it seems to be a good "starter" for me. Thoughts? |
