On the shaft is a donut. As you can see there is a detent to the right that makes me believe this is where it belongs. I can't find any reference to it, so what is it? I see pictures of it in the manual where they talk about the stuffing but in the pictures it looks even closer to the nut than the detent would put it at. Where should this thingamajob be?

Roger,
The shaft collar is one of those "just in case" devices!! Just in case the shaft breaks or comes out of the coupling, you won't loose the shaft out the tail end or damage you prop and rudder. The set collar is supposed to be locked down with it's set screw in the dimple in the prop shaft. BTW, misalignment is the major cause for loosing your shaft out of the coupling. It frets both until the fit is so loose and out comes the shaft. The other extreme is when it doesn't fret but breaks instead!! |

and you need to set it alot closer to the stuffing box, or your prop will hit the shaft if it lets loose

I'm sure Eric has a typo here. "Or your prop will hit the RUDDER if it lets loose." |
