Hey folks,
The previous owner of the boat recently replaced the carpet but it is falling down on the passengers side where it runs up the wall. Just wondering what the best thing to use to re-attach it would be?? Thanks |

I know this isn't officially correct, but after doing my floor with the trowel on stuff where I found out that if you use too much it come sthrough the carpet, I used 3M spray adhesive on the vertical parts. It is still going strong 4 years later.

Just make sure the proper knotch size trowel is used per the instructions and you won't get to much. |

If you have a roller, it really helps stick it down good. I use a small one that I had for sound insulation in vehicles on the small pieces, and borowed the large on from the kitchen foor the larger areas. 3M Super 77 is almost as useful as duct tape.

So what's wrong with the Super 77? Isn't that used in a lot of applications for carpet including sub boxes and marine carpet?

Super 77 or any contact adhesive can work acceptably depending on the carpet backing, if the backing isnt relatively smooth you wont get a lot of surface area to your bond. It works differently than the 263 which should give you more time to reposition and then will form a pretty serious bond to the carpet regardless of backing texture if used properly. Don't use the henry 663 currently found at lowes it is never fully water proof, and gas fumes will eat it alive. I am looking at 600 dollars of carpet that wont stay down now.

I did a test piece early on and once it dried it was hard to seperate...basically ripped the rubber backer. I've been pretty liberal with the adhesive, so that probably helps.

I found the Henry 263 at our local Farm and Barn type store (Fleet Farm, (not Farm and Fleet) for us 'Sconnie boys). Try Tractor Supply or something similar. Lowes does not carry the 263.

Shawn, Do you know someone that's tried to use epoxy??? Wow!! Did you try it? I would think the cure time would be a real problem. |

Shawn,
Got it now!!! The carpet adhesive will stick to epoxy. The contact cement you used sure will too except it doesn't give you any opportunity to move a misplaced carpet. Did you have help? Usually you need about 20 arms and hands with contact cement!! |

3M Supertrim Adhesive. I've used it (successfully) for years. I have a piece of the Lowes indoor/outdoor carpet that looks like corduroy on an aluminum dock which stays outdoors through snow and sun and rain and it is still stickin.
You can adjust the spray pattern and do small areas if needed or large areas. You are allowed some reposition time too. |

Are you using a spray adhesive or is it a can that you are spreading on? I did see some 3M Super 77 in a spray adhesive at the local hardware store.

I used the can, I was doing things that were small at first and trimming off the extra. Worked well, so I used it o. The sides. If you have large pieces where you don't have much extra you could run into a situation like Pete was talking about where you can't move it around. I got the carpet at Lowes and it was cheap enough to where it didn't matter that I wasted a bit.

Wow! Did I buy the wrong stuff at Lowe's? I only spent about $150 for a 6'X 28'piece to cover everything. |

I was more in the 6 x 40 range with the extra's that needed to be covered in a 18 foot long boat, but my 83 being a hobby boat doesn't exactly have a "intelligent" or even "realistic" budget. It was 40 oz marine carpeting.. not something I would recommend... |

cements quicker and easier just fold and roll the glue out.. trowl down can be moved and adjusted but takes twice as long.. made patters out of paper then cut big to alow for triming

I used the 3M spray adhesive as it worked great on my martinique. It holds great even after several years.

I bought some of the High Strength 3M spray adhesive at Auto Zone today($20/can X 3 or 4 cans ) but I found two places locally that sells the Henry's 223(?) Pete was talking about so I may check it out monday.
Question: How long should I allow to install carpet in my 16' CC Skiier? |

Take your time, measure twice, and cut once or it will take longer and cost more;) It took me a few hours to get mine re carpeted after I replaced the flooring. |

Thanks,
This is how I was told to do it: Cut the sides first. Come down the side and on to the floor 2" back to front. Then put the floor down and come up over the 2" from the side to flush with the gunwail. Seal the edge with liguid nails. I asked my contact about the overlap down the side and would it be a hump or look bad and he said that's how they do it from the factory so unless I hear otherwise, that's what I'm going with. scott |

I didn't overlap that much. It would have been lumpy had I done it that way.
What carpeting are you using? I used marine carpeting that have a tad more thickness than the stuff that nautiques have. |

I just bought the best marine carpet they had from Lowe's. Woody at Mastercraft of orlando(formerly Southeast CC) told me that's where he would buy it if it were him. My contact told me about the 2" deal. He said that much would allow for it to even out instead of bucking up with a shorter amount.
I only use the boat 12-20 hours/summer so I just could not justify the Overton's or other expensive stuff. |

Been doing upholstery for 23 years. The spray adhesive is crap. Even 3m. I would never recommend using that. Doesn't hold up after heat hits it. If you have access to a pray paint gun and a compressor, try to find some straight up contact cement. It sprays great out of a gun. Home depot sells it in gallon pails. Or maybe if you have a local upholstery shop you can buy some from them .We sell it all the time to customers. WE buy it by the 55 gallon drums. Also when applying it make sure you put glue on the carpet as well as what you are gluing it to. Let dry for a few minutes the stick it down. You wont have any problems. If you don't have a way to spray it you can always brush it on. Harbor Freight sell spray guns for around 15 to 20 dollars. Been using them for years.
