Hey guys.My boss at CarQuest told me his 88 SN 2001 was overheating. He wanted me to come look at it Saturday. This is what I found.Said all he's done since he bought it new was change the oil and spark plugs. It only has 238 hours! He didn't want me to check the thermostat, not yet at least. I only found 1 fin(vane) in the rwp. The other 2 I told him might be hung up in the t-stat,hopefully! He says it runs around 180' all the time. Well I changed the impeller and ran it,and yes it stayed around 180' for an hour.

Dam it! Marty!   I thought you were talking about a "New Dancer" that was going by the stage name of "Impeller"

Of coarse that's a lot prettier stage name than "Bilgepump"

I have no clue how old my first impeller in mine was when i changed it, but it shredded badly. That was in like 2005, but I am certain that it was not the original impeller. My boat is a 78, with low hours, but I would never expect an impeller to last even 10 years.

Tom,
I feel you're off on the 10 year idea!    Tim above commented on the 22 year figure beating my record but he's off a couple years. I've had my 64 for 28 years and replaced the impellers once (dual cavity pump) and that was better than 25 years ago!! I wish I kept a exact year!! Over the Memorial day weekend, I'll be pulling the pump and will be sure to post a picture of what I find. I'm pulling the pump not because of any cooling problems but the lower hose needs replacing plus I'd say after 25 years I should be looking at the impellers! The biggest issue with these impellers is running them dry. It kills them!! My 54 got a new impeller just for kicks when I rebuilt the engine in 84. Of course it's got pretty low hours on it.

BTW, how's you water level up north? We have a major problem on the Three Lakes chain this year. It's never been this low in it's history. This spring after the normal winter draw down, they kept the dam open for a longer period of time. No one knows why but we are down 24"!! I may not be able to get my boats out of the boat house! Lifts are so far out from piers that some need to wade to get to their boats!! I'm lucky that my lift only needed to be moved several feet out past normal.
