I've made several comments regarding the practice of frequent impeller change being unneeded. I'm on my 29th year of owning my 1964 with the 312. I just opened up the pump to take a look at the impellers after at least 25 years. I really wouldn't have bothered since I had no cooling problems but the bottoms of the hoses at the pump where getting real bad. (soft/gooey from the RV antifreeze) No broken blades, some wear on the tips, some "set" on the blades but no set at the cam from winter storage and some blade warpage.

The bottom line is running them dry is the killer and the marina's are spreading BS all over.

Very interesting. Looks pretty good but then again how often you use your boat, your lake is always empty. Sorry, couldn't resist myself at the cheap shot. Serioulsy now, this really makes me stop worrying about changing the impeller. thanks for keeping us educated.

Pete, How in the world were those pumping?! I had a set impeller on our 88 last spring and it wouldn't keep any volume!

I guess they dont make em like they used to!

Chris,
The impellers still were compressed in the housing. The "set" is very deceiving when they are removed. If anything todays impellers are better due to the better urethane compounds being used. The distortion you see on mine, I contribute to the RV antifreeze. That's what I feel went after my hoses too.

The 25 years calculates out to 500 plus hours.

i just took off my underwear after 2 weeks, a little wrinkled, couple of stains, but good to go, flipped inside out and they are ready to go again.
Pete, everybody has seen someone at the ramps warming they're boats up out of the water, I love the I/O guys, drive all the way up crunching the u-joints, wanging on the throttles out of the water...if they only knew

Keep those impellers original....pete.

Do you have some NOS from the '70s to keep them original?

No more antifreeze for my impeller either. It comes out of the pump and in a moist ziplock bag for winter. 500 hrs later it still looks and works great.

Don't run them dry!
