I have a 66 mustang and the hole shot is not as good as it should be. I am not sure if the current prop is the original (I doubt it is). What is the correct size and pitch for the stock prop? Or does anyone have advise for a prop that would give me more power from a stop? The boat doesn't want to plane off.

What size motor do you have? Do you know what prop is on there now?

It has a rebuilt 289 out of a 67 Ford Mustang. The prop on there now is a 12RH13.

A 12x13 or 12x14 should be fine, something else is up. Does it still have the foam in it? You might be over weight from waterlogged foam.Bring it out to GL,there will be plenty of people there to help figure it out

It had a full tune up a couple weeks ago. I think the timing might be a little off. I had some back firing the other day but I think that had a lot to do with the fuel additive from the shop and the bad Citgo premium I put in. I forgot that the fuel had 10% ethanol so I think it was running a little hot.

Yes, it does still have the foam. I was thinking that but hoping you werent going to say it. I just had the carpet put in. I havent looked around under the floor much but I usually have standing water. When I store it in my garage I usually vacuum out what remains after the bilge pump, but there will be more standing water a couple hours later. That leads me to believe that the foam is water logged. Is there foam in the whole thing? Do I need the foam or can I just remove it all together with out replacing? Its such a beautiful carpet job that I dont want to have to tear it up again.
I am going to try to make it on Friday (should arrive around 4). But I have to leave that night for Milwaukee. |

Friday evening we will be at the Tuscumbia Country Club for the boat show, but if you get in town early you'll be able to find us either at the campground, the Lakeview or Bayview motels.
The foam is everywhere and is alot like digging out a watermelon except it smells. I have dug mine out and have not replaced it ,others have put it back in theirs and still others have used pool noodles. |

The chances are high that you have waterlogged foam and then stringer rot. Some had pulled out 300 - 400 lbs. of wet foam!! Better start reading some of the stringer replacemnt threads. Too bad you put the carpet in.

I was hoping you weren't going to say that. I do not really have the time or money to put into this project for a stringer job (alot of respect to all of you who have done it, seems like quite the project). The guy I bought it from said that he checked and the stringers were still good but I guess I should check for myself. I am going to chip the foam out of the back of the boat, behind the seat, this next week (its the only spot I can reach without tearing the carpet up). Then in a couple weeks I will pull the carpet and floor back up and remove that foam. Will it hurt to remove the foam without replacing it? If I then dry and coat the bilge and the remainder of the bottom of the boat with a sealant, it should get me by shouldnt it? Is there an easy way to reinforce the stringers that wont require me to tear the entire boat apart? This is not my main boat, it is just kind of a fun toy. The higher I can get this boat to sit in the water, the better.

Andrew,
Get the foam out and do some exploring. Post some pictures and we'll go from ther. The "sealant" will do no good and infact may accelerate rot. The waters in there!!! If bad areas are found, injecting some CPES in the wood will probably get you through a few more seasons. You do need to do a alignmnet. With bad stringers, and the misalignments caused by it will harm the trans. |

Pete...dont you have any good news for me? haha
My inboard guy is doing the alignment tomorrow. I am hoping that it will transfer some more power to the water after that (and save me a new tranny & drive shaft). I am trying to convince my girlfriend that a stop in Green Lake is a good idea for us on the way to the wedding. Its about 50/50 right now. |

I think the guy that tuned it up missed it and didn't get it right. The fuel additive and ethanol have nothing to do with it, bunch of BS if that's what you believe caused the backfire. And if anything the ethanol would make it run cooler not hotter but in reality land it did neither. What is the dwell set at? what is the timing set at? what is the idle set at? what plug were installed? was the cap and rotor replaced, were the points replaced? |

The owners of the 3 boats that we have bought all said the stringers were good. They have ranged from mostly good to completely shot.
