Weight of boat

Figure the weight to be around 1600. It could be a couple hundred more if it's the "Super" with the double planked bottom.

I feel you're off on the year (or model). In 55 the Atom was still a 14'6" hull. The 15' I believe came out in 57 to get the 6 cylinder engine in it.

Pictures would be great. I'd love to see the project. Do plan on taking it all the way down to the frame. You'll find that the bedding compound CC used between the hull and the frames will be completely dried out. The only thing holding it together will be the screws.

Now, one more thing. Keep it original!!    

EDIT: It was 56 when the Atom went to 15'.

See if you can find the hull tag if you haven't already. It's ether on the port hull side frame by the forward seat or inside the dog house (engine cover). The hull number with start with a couple letters indicating the model and then numbers. The numbers are simply a serial number so there isn't any "code" buried in them.

The double planked hulls where ply boats with just a additional layer of actual planks. Has this boat been glassed on the hull bottom so it may be difficult for you to see the planks? If it has been, you should still be able to see a shadow or outline of the planks.

For picture posting, you need to click on the "post reply" over to the left. Then above you'll see the icon with a picture of tree with a up arrow. Clicking on it will bring up a "browse" feature. You'll then be able to find pictures in your computer. Resizing the pictures to the sites screen size may be needed. If you don't have the software to do it on your own computer, then a internet photo site such as photobucket.com can be used.

OK Thanks. I have planking with a little access area, like a open glove box, where that would be behind. I'll go back out tomorrow and check again. Re the name, I was (am) a sailor and knew re the atomic 4 you speak of, but I am moving to smaller boats. Cochrane Boat Yard was the original seller back in the old days. I just saw the plate on the boat. It was on Lake Minnetonta in Minnesota, the home of a bunch of woodies, Chris Crafts, etc. so that made sense. I bought it from a private party who hadn't run it for some years. I am taking it to Harbor Cove here in Duluth, where I slipped a 32 Carver, to have them look at the engine and see if it will run.   I do need to get a bunked trailer. I have one that is a homebuild with a center bunk but several worn out rollers on each side. Re the year etc., the J38 could just as well be a be a J58, I just couldn't be positive. I'm going back to try to get some photos up. Thanks again. Steve

I take it you haven't tried to get the engine going?? I just hate for you to take it to someone without at least trying. You're a sailer so you must be "half way" mechanically inclined!! I just hate to see you take it to someone who doesn't have the faintest idea of what a Gray is.

BTW, are you on a very slow web connection? You double posted. No big deal but you can go back in and delete one of them. Sometimes on a slow connection, you think the site isn't taking the post and you mistakenly hit the "post" twice.

Go out and get a 6 volt battery, hook up the garden hose and give it a try.

Sorry but Harbor Cove doesn't "ring a bell" nor does it come up in any of the ACBS directories. Sail or power? If sail, do as I recommend and join the BSLOL chapter of the ACBS.

Personally (sorry) but I wouldn't even let a sail guy look at my boat. Pretty different schools of thought.

OMG!!!! How deep is your bank account?? Trust me, you are truly taking that boat to the wrong spot. You must have developed a relationship with them with your sail experience.

Are you pictures coming up too big for the site?

Getting there with the pics!! now the next step is with the sizing!!

Hi back Pete Happy New Year Boat is upside down, hull sanded, wood is just fine, no dry rot. solid. double planked hull. Still not sure re the year/make but your suggestion as to hull number J38-211 as Junior, March 1958, boat 211 sounds like it. Engine kicked right over. Upholstering coming along, crafting a new windshield bracket(s) as origninal gone. Thanks for your help. Steve
