One thing about the boom...
I have the countoured one..and want to set it higher..the clamp is now 3" from the floor, height is now almost at the chest...but putting the clamp at the floor seems it will be difficult to put or adjusting? I was considering putting some type of rubber block between boom and gunnel? does is sound right? |

Kapla, so even as a "newbie" barefooter, I do have some experience in this area, HA!
I have one of the height adjusters hanging down from my clamp, sitting just above the floor (less then 1/2"). Initially, I was having big trouble getting the boom to go all the way to the bottom. I learned if you loosen the clamp where the adjuster fits in, it allows the adjuster to swing away from the pylon which then allows the boom to fit into the clamp. I also have the countour boom and it allows me to get it as high as you see in the video. They are a bit pricey (but what isn't in this sport) but will worth it, especially if you are going to be moving the boom up and down. Alternatively you could get a tower boom with the electronic height adjuster, they had that up at cowzrus, it was really slick! Let me know if you want me to take some pictures? |

that is one way to do it. I have seen others use a wood board with a notch at the top to prop the boom up off the floor. others I have seen rotate the boom 180 degrees so it is inverted (the contour is reversed). This last method can crank the boom pretty high.
If you look at this video you can see the "inverted" boom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdHcl_nnGHg |

Steve thanks for your insights!! no problem with moving the clamp. I always carry some wrenches in the boat and the 3/4 is there!!! that adjuster is a little pricey for me...have to add some shipping and customs fees to get it here (no used ones available here)...
and the electric one..overkill.. So I guess I will move the clamp and leave 1" cleareance and see how it works... |

Roy, sun is out, so I may be able to get some pics. Unfortunately, its a kid run so no footing for me. Maybe tonight I will start teaching my oldest (12) to drive, she should be ready!
Kapla, that should work, the issue I was having when you go that low, the tapered section on the boom prevented the hole from sitting far enough in that you could get the pin through. The angle was too steep. The adjuster can swing away from the pylon, reducing the angle (think of a "V" where the boom makes up one side and the height adjuster makes the other. Again, I'll try and post a picture this evening. |

as Roy mentioned above the cheapest easiest way to get your boom high is to flip over a contour boom upside down(no additional cost). Next is a 2X6 or 2X8 about 3 feet long with some 3 inch holes cut in one end which the boom goes through, it braces it from the floor, gets it off the gunnel and gets it as high as you like and you can still have your pylon mount in the middle or so of the pylon(not on the floor where its harder to wrench on)
If you use cushions or rubber it isn't as rigid and does not work as good...but that works too. |

Ok, so here is the pic of the height adjuster. You can see how it swings away from the pylon allowing the boom to go to the lowest hole. If the height adjuster is parallel to the boom, then the round part of the boom hits the height adjuster (at the center of the V) because the angle is to sharp and you can't get the pin in the hole. Hope this makes sense. I tried flipping mine upside down, that gets you tons of elevation off the boom, much easier fix. Anyway here is the pic:

Kap, How high are you trying to go? Have you tried a couple of cheap throw cushins at the gunnel? If you do lower the clamp to the floor will you be able to open the dog houses easily? Throw cushins are cheap, but a straight main section could be fabricated pretty cheap down there I would think.

Steve,
I like that adjuster. Is that stock or after market. My only complaint about adding cushions for height is I get too much bounce in the boom. Works for me, but beginners don't like it too much. JMO. |

Here is some video from Friday. After the clinic with David Small he has me doing more long line shoe ski work backwards (learning to steer) and forwards (one foot wake crossings). Surprisingly sore afterwards too by crunching on the one-foots and more knee bend backwards:

Its an almost exact copy of the BFI adjuster. Its good to have buddies that are master fabricators and have access to big expensive machines... If you want more details send me an email, I probably have already said to much on an open forum. (Guess I have seen my company pursue way to many IP infringement lawsuits - has me scared) |

Ok, so can you actually "steer" in the butt glide, or do you have a really good driver that puts you outside the wake? |

Steve,
They call it "edging-out" or "cheeking-out" (butt cheek). You can try it yourself or the driver can give you a little help and get you out there. Never been my strength, but I can do it. Willie Farrell keep heckling me to forget the edge out and learn to get up in the wake. So I do both. If I can't make it out there, I plant in the wake. I communicate that to the driver before we start as to what my plan is. |

Had another killer day on the water yesterday. I was doing wake crosses out of my mind. I am wanting the one foot wake cross now. Just bubbled up to the top of my "to do" list. Beats the hell out of fixing the screen door!
Lot's of fun, very relaxed time on the water. Cure for Mondays |

Looks like your wake crossings are getting better just since your last video. Thanks for posting these, it gets me all fired up to go out and try more stuff. AWESOME! Hoping for tonight again, if I can find a boat driver. Otherwise it will be me driving for my 12 year old.

I´m in the same situation..It hard for me to find driver..more now in the winter... As for your kid driving??? you ski on a private lake or something? No boat license needed? no water police ver there? down here coast guard are everywhere and like to do tickets....if driver is unlicensed they can even confiscate the boat Other thing It worries me is insurance liability.... |

Sebastian; In WI, after a 12 year old takes and passes a boaters safety course they can operate a boat, no license required. We are long way from having her drive skiers behind the Nautique, but probably time to start getting her comfortable driving the boat. My wife is deathly afraid of driving, mainly due to her father never letting her drive a boat. So I want to make sure that does not happen with my daughter.
Got out footing last night with the guys. It was one of those three step backwards nights. Have yet to download the video out of the camera, but I am pretty sure it's mostly crashes and me flopping around like a fish... May post it for general amusement, again have to see how bad it is. Was pushing pretty hard to do some new things (long line deeps, short-line/boom tumble up, one foots) but think I need to really focus on the basics: three point to standing, sitting, standing, sitting, standing, etc. I was happy to figure out the "Cheeking out" thing as well as steering with my feet. So I guess I did get a couple of new things under the belt. Looking forward to the next outing. |

Steve I also have a wife afraid of driving actually not all that fond of the water but wanted our kids to be confident. My daughters learned to drive the boat around 12 years old they could not legally tow skiers till 16 years of age.
We used to get right up the river by ourselves and they started to tow me around before they were sixteen. It was tough early but they are both excellent drivers now. Even when they could tow legally they used to get away from the high traffic areas as they knew the safety of the skier was their responsibility. Only problem with teenage girls was that how they looked was more important than maintaining the correct speed . The mirrors were for hair styling and makeup checks. I remember pulling the mirror out and the fuse for the stereo. |

Mark; Thats great to hear. We have a whole week at the inlaw's cottage starting on Sunday, so we'll have lots of time to practice driving. Sydney (my 12 year old - who by the way thinks its really cool that they named that little town in Australia after her), hasn't hit that stage yet, so I will remember the fuse/mirror tricks when she does!
Missed seeing you at GL this year. Hope your winter skiing is going well! |

Steve,
We need to plan a ski day/driving clinic with My Maddie (11yrs) and your Sydney on our lake before this season ends. Maddie will be taking the licensing exam this winter so I have been trying to get her even more time pulling skiers in prep for next year. Drop me an email at CQuinn@GFGR.com |

went saturday to do some footing, damn it was cold!! still need to work some in the 3 point before planting my feet...I get fuzzed on where to put my arms when going from sliding on the butt to when I try to bend the knees to glide the 3 points..I try to lift my arms around the knees but then I loose force and water slaps me back..then I try to control again..and that its...with the cold I burn to fast....
Only 5 minutes I was able to runs before I totally burned..to finish the last run I was starting from the boom..and I ended up hitting the water with my shoulder and head (little bruise)..also my hand slaped against water making a nice bruise.... cold water feels like concrete.... at least body was warm inside the drysuit... |

Not really sure what your describing. Try to keep your hands wide on the handle. Knees slightly inside your shoulders and your arms as straight and as relaxed as possible so that the pull comes from your shoulder then you should be alright.

yyy--eee--sss---..
ha At least I borrowed him the towel I took..which I didn´t use of course... generally I´m pleased with the BI suit... But I´m experiencing some water spray in my face..that with the wetsuit i didn´t had...is it possible that loose end of the ankle strap may be hitting the water and directing it to my face? anyway it seems to be some seconds after I plant and seems to clear once I get the right speed...but those second are annoying.... |

There's a lot of extra spray because the suit has so much more surface area. I never did like the BI cuffs and neck, they look like they drag.
