Any suggestions for replacing the filter in the fram fuel filter/water separator. I understand that it unscrews like an oil filter but this one will not budge. The boat is a 1987 with a 351 PCM and the filter has never been changed. Should I take it out of the boat? Any suggestions on upgrading to handle the new ethanol mixed gas?

Remove it from the bracket, empty the fuel out(I put a petcock in the bottom to make it easier)
Put it in a vise upside down, (with padding of some sort /rag)
Gently snug the vise to keep it from moving,
Then unscrew using a normal oil filter wrench

Thanks for the information. I have heard of people changing all the rubber fuel hoses to deal with the ethanol gas mixtures. Any suggestion on this since I will need to break the fuel lines to take off the filter?

I have an 88 and was unable to get mine to unscrew as well. Mine had the long filter/separator. My solution was to replace the whole separator (filter, housing and all) with a different fuel water separator that I got from Discount Inboard Marine. It required that I modify the bracket, but it was easy to do and relatively inexpensive. I cannot answer your ethanol related question.

Disclaimer: I'm a hobbyist not an expert, just answering part of your question. Many, many more on here will chime in I'm sure that no way more than me, just had experience with some of your situation and wanted to reply.

BTW, your location say Andorra...Is that Andorra as in Spain?

Follow this advice. Did the same thing to my 93 sn. Worked great.

Hello,

I too removed mine from the boat. I tried to twist off mine on my 1980, but I did not have a vise so I could not get it apart. Then I saw that it is held together by a bolt that runs through the center of the filter. I removed the bolt and the thing comes apart. I am glad I could not get it in a vise and put a lot of pressure on it. I would of destroyed it.

Just try to find gas with no ethanol. Do not use Murphy USA Gas ( Walmart) it has a high alchol content.

I too am just a hobbyist and not an expert, but it is how I changed my Fram fuel sepertor. Mine is the cartridge type.

this has nothing to do with anything and a bunch of BS about the gas, 10% ethanol has been used for over twenty years with out any issues and it's just a bunch of BS marina's are throughing out to drum up buisness.


Actually you need to throw that POS frame in the trash and update it to a new spin-on style seperator.

Actually, the marina at Green Lake had "91 octane - Non-ethanol" gas. Or so the sign said... I was kinda shocked to find non-ethanol gas, especially in the middle of corn country.

I wouldn't put a Fram filter on my lawnmower, they are junk, Throw it out and get a good filter.

which way does the element go in the canister? the Fram one(POS by the way) that i got a couple of weeks ago had a "Top" on one end but the element that was in the boat came out the opposite way(no orientation markings on that one).


second question... is there supposed to be a gasket on both sides of the element? the new PCM one did not come with both like the fram and original had.

last one. How tight is the canister supposed to be?

I have no idea why the old filter had a "top" marked on it. The flow is fom inside to outside the the Up/down position makes now difference. All I can think of is it had to do with the end gasketing.

The element you got has the gaskets built in,

Tightness? as long as it doesn't leak, you're ok. It's on the suction side of the pump so it shouldn't take much.

The bottom has the metal part. The end marked TOP goes to the TOP.
The top being the part of the housing where the fuel lines come in.

I believe the bottom part (metal half) is the water seperator as the water will drop to the bottom of the canister.
Thats one of the reasons I replaced the plug in the bottom with a petcock so I can sump the filter housing if need be.

Next time get a wix. I'll post the filter number tomorrow if I remember.

The Wix number is (33436) it's a much better filter IMHO

I just replaced mine and after hearing all of the trouble about getting the thing apart, I just started by taking it off. I took it to my friend's Good Year Shop and two guys, a vice and a large wrench got it apart. I replace mine with a NAPA Gold Fuel Filter #3436, instructions attached.

I didn't fill my filter with gas before putting it back together, filled the tank and thought it would gravity feed, it didn't. I had both of the brass air vents off the filter too. I finally got funnel and filled the orange/black can with fuel from the bleed air vents and it seems to run fine? I put the gas in the most middle hole and when it came out the other hole I stopped.

Just as an FYI on this topic.. I had replaced the element in this filter with the Fram element from Skidim about a year and a half ago.. didnt have a fuel water seperator before that. Anyway I had some annoying issues with carbs this summer, turned out to be stuff gumming up my high speed jets.. the source of the stuff appeared to be the glue that goes between the gasket between the two elements of the fram filter/seperator. When I went into the seperator to look for the source of the stuff I noticed the glue was swollen and breaking apart and was the same color of the stuff I had been pulling out of my jets. All the premium gas around here has ethanol, and frankly I dont want anything in my boat that can't handle a little ethanol as I have already gone through the expense of changing out pretty much everything in my fuel system I am hoping that trying the napa number above gets me back to ethanol safe.
