Bump and a related question - my temp gauge started reading low (tops out around 120 rather than 140). Is there are good way to test the gauge or the sending unit to see which is broken (I'm assuming it's one of them). If there's not an easy way to test them, any guesses on which one it is (i.e. which I should try replacing first)?
Thanks

you won't find the correct sending unit at NAPA or any other autoparts store. The marine units run on a different resistance than the automotive ones do.

I would Call Karen and ask for it specificly if you are not sure which one to order on the website.

Here is another option as well

If you have or know someone who has one of the I.R. thermometers, they are great for checking the actual temp of the engine. Take it's temperature as close to the sender as possible and them compare it to the gauge reading.

It also won't hurt to clean up any connections in your wiring. If corroded it will add resistance and lower the temp reading on the gauge. You'll also what to check the voltage you are getting to your gauges. That too will have a effect.
