I'm curious if anyone has used a t400 or powerglide in their Correct craft or has any thoughts on why or why not?

I have to ask why would you even consider using a automotive trans in a marine application? You don't need the gearing and the efficiency would be pathetic due the the losses through the torque converter until you get up to the speed/RPM's where it would go into lock up. How would you handle the length plus get it low enough in the bilge? Heat?? You'd need one hell of a trans cooler!!!! |

how about a muncie 4 speed. no torque converter, no trans cooler, just need to figure out where to mount the clutch pedal and where to mount the shifter!
you could even add a Hurst T handle shifter knob! |

I had a power glide in an old Ford truck and I hated the way that thing shifted into 2nd at 5500 rpms. GM put those things in all their muscle cars until 1967/68. I knew a guy that had a 427 Vette with one. What a dog.
I don't see how the present drive systems can be improved on an inboard. |

Actually Lenco make a multi speed marine transmission for abusive type applications. The drag boat boys and the big west coast day cruiser types have been using powerglides and turbo 350 and 400's for 30 plus years. Hurth makes a multi gear transmission I think it is available in the MB sports.
For more information you can take a look at www.v-driveboat.com you will see plenty of v-drives with automotive transmission. Cheers! |

This is along those lines. The t400 is 3" longer than the Velvet d.

For those that suggested a torque converter- I have no idea why you would with the cushioning of the prop in the water. I'm surprised someone hasn't done this with a BFN etc. Maybe a person can't get enough prop under a correct Craft to make it worth while. |

Power glide works well in Vdrive flatty. No converter, then you have low for the no wake area and reverse too.But I'm with doc no room in a SN for such a set up

I think maybe my next ski boat project might include a automatic transmission of some nature.
I do have a high HP 455 pontiac marinized for direct drive or v-drive usage. A Casale 12* with 18's short coupled to a powerglide and the big pontiac all in the old 82 2001 Ski Nautique!!! I wonder what Hilborn injectors would look like poking up thru the motor box??? |

Jody-
I'm still thinking a V6 with a two speed tranny. Maybe even go with something like a CVT like a snowmobile has. Naysayers are the ones who buy the technology after it is designed. |

I kind of got both boots dropped on me in this thread. I didn't mean to hurt anyones feelings but I kind of knew the Pete police would be on me!. That torquey old 455 with some gearing would be quite the setup. I'd love to see this on a big v drive correct craft- it would have to allow an amazing holeshot. Hmmmm Mechanical Hilborns!! Great sound!

I have learned to ignore the Pete Police!
Working at Correct Craft for as long as I did I learned that just because the boat was designed and put together that way does not mean it can not be Improved upon. We played with the Hurth 2 speed while the design and water testing was being done on the 220. Cost of the unit was a big concern and it stayed on the back burner and never made it to prodction. I for one would certinaly like to see some sort of multi speed gear in current ski/tournament boats. It is the 21 century. Ya a lot of these guys would cringe seeing the top cut out of a old 2001 motor box for a super mondo induction set up. Might even throw a set of twist Bassetts on the project!!!! |

Its going to take a big prop!Since final drive in any of those is 1:1 to gain any advantage you have to spin a big prop. There also can't be any/none lag in the shift or it will nose over big.We played with this years ago.I reckon some big over drive gears in the v drive could keep the prop size reasonable.I had this set up in an old sanger because I was poor and wanted reverse for docking.I changed it to velvet drive when I got the chance!People sure look at you funny when it shifts, thats the best part!

I've also been watching sprint car sites looking for an injector set up for sbc.I think it would look very cool.Ranger would prob grief me about no flame arrestors too, even though it it an open boat.

Munday- it was the yellow Sangers Utube video that clued me into this whole tranny thing. He was using a T400 2nd and third with the rev limiter at 6000 on the tranny. It hits hard on the upshift. Then the whole tranny thing came up again on the Donzi forum when I was looking for a 22.

dont worry FI, by looking at the Mastercrafts yesterday again at the dealer....they'll come up with something...IMO CC is lagging on the new stuff, even the vents are flow jet cut on the MC's. of course i have to do did a side by side with a CC, but appears as if the MC's came a long long way in the last 5 years

i am told that mechanical fuel injection can be very finicky. for the most part it it used in all or nothing applications such as drag cars or sprints, but this is not to say that it cant be done if you dont mind some extra tuning. as for running a power glide, why run a torque converter? you can buy all the parts you need to run a direct drive pg on the internet, i would check out speedway for starters. give 'r hell.

What happens when the ideal trick speed or slalom is right where the tranny keeps shifting in and out of drive?

That wouldn't happen normally. The trannies have a governor for max rpms but no part throttle kick down or mgmt system for economy like a car does. The normal scenario for a tranny equiped skiboat may be to use 2nd gear to pull the ski club out of the deep and go to 3rd(possibly 1:1) to take them home. I can also imagine somebody trying to decide between a Supercharger or a multi geared transmission or both to get a few extra MPH on a big ski boat. |
