Just witnessed the "MECA" of barefoot waterskiing locations. I attended the "Jump Jam" at the Barefoot Ski Ranch outside Waco, TX. I cannot think of a more beautiful place for any waterspot. If I ever get married, it well be there! Of course David Small won the event. This "Jump Jam" will now be a regular event. They had a bar, grill, security, the whole nine yards. They will also be hosting the U.S. Nationals next year. Book your tickets now. This facility is amazing!

This is the quickest way to learn how to foot. If you can ski on two, just tell the driver to speed up. tighten the butt cheeks, and jump.
What Jbear calls the "Grave Jump" At 47 years old, not too bad. ![]() |

Is that you on the grave jump Steve? At 47 years old I'd say that is a pretty freakin' awesome trick. Ain't done any more of those since I missed one at Norris about 3 summers ago. My neck hurt for about a whole year. john |

Yes John, that's me. I do that trick in our show. The Grave Jump name is so appropriate. When it doesn't go right, it's rarely an easy fall.

For those of you footers in the Southeast United States that like to race I found this, a race in memory of Stewart Bieber, a footer who died during a barefoot ski show act earlier this year. Link |

It was legendary in the Sacramento Deep Water Channel on Wednesday morning. 20 mile of great water. its a shame we only had energy to ski a few miles of it. Water still warm, but cooling off:

Roy, those one foot wake crosses look TOUGH! The two footers are awesome! I notice you have a lot more of a "seated" positioning, I think I am standing too tall. Got out Wed. night with the new camera just have not had time to edit it down. Will post soon.

my basic one-foot wake cross is pretty easy, although I don't think any were in the video. The reverse is tough. Willie tells me I need more leg strength on the reverse foot. That segment where I was doing the one foots behind the boat he wanted me to ski into the churn, lift a foot and ski out. Nasty. I was too tired by that time to really do it. Headed out today to ski with Willie. Film at eleven...

Ok finally got around to editing last week's night out. For whatever reason the clip of my neighbors didn't render. Have to sort through those gremlins. Not a lot of anything special here other then WOW is this camera something, if you pause the video, you can actually count my toes - crazy from 100 feet away.
Highlights: First clip, good run but what the heck made me fall, I can't see anything obvious. Is it something in my form? I know these are boring but it's getting me more comfortable riding and controlling direction. Second Clip - Planted too early, too slow, still haven't figured out how to tell how fast I am going on the water. Clip 3 - Stuck in the prop wash, not much else to say, reminds of the Christmas Story "Stuck, Stuuuck, Stuuuckkk!!!". Clip 4 - this is what happens when you get tired... Not sure why the rest didn't work out (Clip 5 of my neighbor and his Uncle). I think it's cool to see how important it is to keep your elbows in, that could be one of the best tips, I have gotten. You can really see it in the first clip when transitioning out of the water, my elbows leave the side and I start going all over the place, I jam them back and instant control. Super huge tip. On to the video: |

Ryan: Man that fall happened so fast, I was skiing along, boat was just starting to straighten out, and BAM I am in the water head over heals. I hit hard too, bruised my hand from thumping the water. I just don't see where it went bad, in the slo-mo you see my right foot get caught, but I didn't feel it. I let go as soon as I knew what was going on, instincts took over, because you can see I get my chin tucked too. I am pretty sure the rope is falling at the same speed as my hands, because I know I wasn't hanging on.
Mark: Here is the link: Footin 22 Sep I am very jealous. Have to figure out how to get Motorola to send me to Australia for the Winter (your summer)... |

Steve: That is some solid long line footing. Your faceplant was a good one too. You appeared to get fatigued, you started standing up straighter and lost your glide on that foot, likely cuz your ankle went "soft". Keep the ankle flexed. Get comfortable, but not lazy. As soon as you "think you have it down" in this sport, you will be rewarded with a head packer.
I am stoked you are planting in the wake. Good way to get on your feet fast. A couple of ideas: 1. I think that rope has too much stretch and partly causes a lot of that bouncing you are experiencing on your plane and plant. Looks like a stick ski rope. Ditch it and get a very low, or no stretch rope. I like KSO's Signature rope, I think it is a US Gear. 150 bucks, but the last rope you will ever buy. 2. Start crossing the wake on those turns! It will be fun, and get you used to wake slalom. Plus you won't be fighting the turn of the boat, which fatigued you and lead to the fall. Digging the video and your progress! |

One more thing, watching the video again. Your driver is really hammering you out of the water. I do not think it is necessary. I think you are going too fast on the pull out: you haven't even sat up yet and you are hauling. If it were a more gradual pull-out, get settled on your butt glide (15-20 MPH) then he hammers it, I think that unstable start (side to side) will vanish.

Roy; Makes sense, and I can see myself stand up right before the fall. Amazing how the little things get you.
That rope is probably a 10 to 15 year old BFI rope that is my neighbors. I ordered a Spectra BFI rope two weeks ago and waiting for it to arrive. Will see how that one works when it shows up. Maybe I will put the KSO on my Christmas list ![]() Will work on the wake crosses. Also will talk to my driver, I don't ever like to complain because I am so tickled just to have someone drive... Time for tactful, polite request for some changes on the pull. We have perfect weather this week, but everybody is working so can't get out, uggghhh. Next week I have to go to MD, I sure hope the weather holds so I can get one or two more runs in the following week. Keeping those fingers crossed! |

That first clip is a nice long run. I think Roy is right on target on the cause of the fall....you just got a little upright.
If you get your driver to go a little easier on the starts, you might want to try "cheeking" out of the wake before you stand up. A lot of 'footers will get outside of the wake and let that be the cue for the driver to put the hammer down. You'll need to be going at slower speed in order to get enough bite on the water to steer on your butt, maybe 25 tops. Once you are out in the curl, standing will be much easier and more pleasant. |

5 foot line off the boom, 43 mph in a toe hold.. hah, i thought it was funny how my face was just hitting the water and the boat already past me... some how i was airborne for a couple seconds after my toe caught, hah not sure how that happened. This was a few seconds prior ![]() |

I agree andy. you are soooo far back there. I have skidded on my face/upper chest on a few falls. Never rotated, just kept skidding. No wonder it was the toe-hold. those remain the most vicious falls I have taken. Back one foots are right in there too...
