NO DRAINS IN STRINGERS?

I purchased a 1972 martinique in June and kept it on a mooring. the cover wasn't good so it did get rain. The bilge pump did not clean out the water outboard of the stringers where the exhuast pipes are. I can't find any drain holes near the transom or anywhere else. Perhaps it was rebuilt improperly or built wrong. my question is, do I just drill holes thru the stringers near the transom and near the engine? And do I have to remove the fuel tank and exhuast pipes ?

Not too long ago, I was corrected after stating there wasn't a means of water getting out from outside the main stringers!! Check for holes around the engine. When the boat sits roughly level, that's your low point. Don't go drilling holes in your stringers unless you're looking for rot! BTW, unless the hull has had a stringer job, you will have it!! Have you checked the engine/prop shaft/strut alignment? That's a pretty good indicator of how bad the stringers are.

The drain hole should be about 5 inches in front of the tranny mounts at the bottom near the hull.

I've got a '74 Martinique and that's where my drain holes are located, and I invariably will have water trapped there until it slowly makes its way to the drain holes.

The no holes in stringers may be a bigger job the I thought. the foam near the transom behind the stringers is soaked and there are NO holes ahead of the trans mount or at the transom. I may have to cut holes and seal them with epoxy to prevent rot. how does the floor lift out? another BIG job ? I think the boat may have been glassed on a Friday afternoon as how could they FORGET to put in drains. It looks original, but it's a 72 so who knows for sure. If it was so simple, everyone would have one. Any advise? thanks for listening.

Jim, post some pictures of what youre looking at. Theres a good chance we'll be able to tell if it was a factory job or not. If it is, we'll at least know how it was put together originally and may be able to point you in the right direction.

The holes can be hard to find, kind of just a rough area of fiberglass might be all you'd feel with a fingertip, if you felt it at all. Try taking a piece of rigid wire (coathanger works well) and slide it along the bottom seam of the stringer, you might find it.

Mine collects water outside the stringers if I haven't run a wire through the limber holes to clear them.

My 73 Skier had tiny drain holes that clogged really easy with any debris. I second poking around with a wire. I also second Pete's assumption that there will be rot.

back to the no drain problem, I can't find drain holes anywhere. i plan on removing fuel tank and taking out wet soaked foam, and I guess I should remove the floor to access further wet floatation. how is the floor removed? When this happens, I'll drill some drain holes. Also, how can I tell if there is rot in the stringers ? They look solid and the motor/shaft alignment also seems fine. ?? I'll try to figure how to post photos, new mac after years on PC !!

Did you actually separate the coupling halves and use a feeler gauge for the alignment check?

You're going to have to saw the floor out. A "skil" saw run up the sides of the boat works for most. It can be trimmed later if needed.

One you get the floor and foam out, post some pictures and we'll take a look. "core" samples of the wood are taken with a 1" hole saw. The pilot drill will get some wood out to check and the hole saw itself will remove the glass so you can look at the wood surface.
