Possible oil cooler adapter and lines.
How is it going Greg?? Fancy a engine manufacturer putting a oil filter in such a hard place to work on in a boat. What were they thinking!!!! No wonder the US government had to buy them. |

I wonder if it's a 'Mr. Freezie Oil Cooler' from a TV ad or if it's a quality part. I guess it's a non-issue because of what Mark said(that thing drops the filter another 2" or so) and because I only have half of it.
I've never seen anything like it so I had to ask! |

I meant to ask about that 1/8" copper line above the filter too. My PCM 454 didn't have that.
If anyone sees something that dates the engine, I'd be interested. It should have a date code somewhere, but that's under some serious crud. |

seeing the engine is pretty muddy/greasy i would think it was from a piece of heavy equipment ie. travel lift, and no wind blowing thru the radiator, just a fan, and you need a remote cooler

alot of stops and starts, heavy equipment or equivalent, although Mercruiser does use a piggyback cooler that will cool engine oil and steer oil

I guess its one of those if you needed it, PCM wouldve put one on there for you...ski boat really is not a cruiser that typically will see sustained RPM's for long periods, before taking out of context, sustained for 1 hour or more??

Sustained for more than 1 hour?
My cruise temp is ~165. It'll only see 180 after a WOT run. I found a cool set of heads under all that crud; now to see if it is a 2 or 4! |

I failed to mention to you that I did buy a bad set of heads, and didnt want to pass them along....i didnt realize they came off a frozen turd and pulled the pipe plug and seen a crack around the valve guide..I'll keep my eyes open for another set.
what kinda heads on that mud ball? |

I'm going to tell Amy what you called her engine.
It was nasty...clearly been leaking oil for many miles. It's super clean on the inside though except for the valve covers. The assembly turns smoothly, the cylinders are nice with a minimal ridge... I wish I had a bore gauge. I think it's been apart once before. |

Early interceptor marine engines sported oil coolers both as optional and standard features at different times, amongst others.. but I am guessing it was primarily a band aid to what were less efficient engine cooling systems. Ford has a similar bolt on filter extension/oil cooler outlet bracket for the windsor engines used in various fleet vehicles and police interceptors over the years, and a slightly better design for the modular engines used in similar applications. Is it part of the reason they typically run into the many hundred thousands of miles, dont know but they probably don't hurt. Either way I would deep six it...

Nice BBC find. The oil cooler is pretty common on GM trucks and utility vehicles. Both of my Suburbans and my Tahoe have them.
If you are interested I have the following for a BBC. Right hand camshaft, it was out of a HP motor built for SeaWorld. A new remote oil filter kit. And a Right hand balancer. I also have a big oval cast iron intake manifold that is not a spread bore but standard Holley 4BBL. Call me if you are interested. Jody |

And Thanks Jody, I know I want the balancer. I'll give you a call maybe Monday? I probably won't get back to it until then. It's a 2-bolt. I'm still glad it followed me home though. All things considered, it's in great shape. Nothing is scored and everything has factory bearings. I still have the 4-bolt caps from the frozen block, and the inside holes line up with the '2-bolts'. I wonder if it's expensive to drill and tap the others or even if it's worth it. I've heard of 2-bolts turning well over 6k. |

I think you need to get a blower and some NOS and then alot of insurance so when you pull someone's arms out of socket you can pay for the medical bills - good luck with the build-up and if you ever need any assistance give me a shout I am just down the road a little ways

its 50/50 on the boat 2 bolt 4 bolt, people at times think the 4 bolts is so the crank doesnt fly out the bottem, in reality it is for block twist which in a boat is not as prevelent as it would be in a low gear heavy loaded truck, Ive pulled many 370 horse blocks down (marine) and they were 2 bolt

I'm having a hard time picturing a block twisting, but I guess even continents move a little. I started reading some Chevy forums and the best line yet is "a 4-bolt is for guys who can't sleep at night". The summary so far is 2-bolts are fine to 6000-6500 and 500-600 HP.
I'm going to price the drill and tap or adding studs, but I'm not going to worry about it. |

around here, there were some issues bacause of oil pressure loss and many engines were blowing up back in the 70's, so it was common to add the oil cooler to the engines, probably due to oil quality by the time.

Hey Greg if your going to have machine work done check with your shop and see what they recommend.When you change caps you will need to have it align bored anyway.By the time you buy the drill and break off the tap you'll be way ahead. See you at the river run??? |

We're planning on it. Billy will kick my butt if we miss 2 in a row! After some reading, I think I'll go with main studs and sleep well at night. Splayed 4-bolts seem to be the way to go on SBC's, but there is an oil gallery on the starboard side of a 454 so the 3rd and 4th have to go straight in. I could use studs and a girdle...still seems like overkill for my application though. The general consensus on the hot rod forums is that 2 are fine for a naturally aspirated engine. |

Greg, same persona out there as you gotta have a Ford 9" in the ass end, these guy's putt around in there 50k fresh built hot rods and putt back and forth to the car shows, never ever smoking the tires off. im putting a 37 ford panel truck together for my uncle and he wants a 9" in the ass....he showed up with a flathead v-8, talked him out of that, got him a Mustang 2 front end, obviously i asked what he was going to do with this thing and he said drive it around...
needless to say because i have one laying around, a 10 bolt chevy is going under it, one of the younger guys at the shop keeps putting the bug in his head about the ford 9" only because he runs a 88 trans am with a Ford 9", the kid built up a small block Chevy and seems to think he has 500 hp.......well i made him a bet, when he is all done i told him we will take it down to the dyno and if he has more than 300 at the rear wheels I'll give him 500 bucks...not even worried |
