Connorsons-
Did you do it inside or outside? I am interested to know the odor associated with it. Also, do you mind sending me a pic of your dolley that the boat is on? I tried to PM you, but the email must not have gotten through. I am near Kalamazoo. Where are you? |

What odor are you talking about? Ive never noticed much of an odor at all with epoxy based fiberglass, CPES included. The only thing that seems to really be better outside is the grinding- but thats because of the dust. Ive heard that polyester is a different story, but dont have any experience with it. |

Holy crap Tim, CPES odor is unbearable. Give it about 30 minutes to kick and it will knock you over.
Connorsons, If you used the regular formula and not the cold weather you MAY still be able to apply a second coat and get it to penetrate. I would aplly a second coat right now, it will still get into any open grains as one coat probably just got sucked in deep. I started using the cold weather formula so I can do all my CPESing outside. |

Tim, not sure how you could think that about the CPES. It is extremely fumey. The epoxy is hardly fumey at all.
I wore a respirator doing anything with CPES, even after it flashes off it stuck around for a few hours. Never with the epoxy. Edit: Holy crap is right!!!!!! |

I've never had a problem with the odor ether but I have always been very tolerant to solvents. I don't even wear a resperator when spraying! Maybe that's why I can't remember anything anymore?

It smells like progress, out with the old and in with the new.I too have used my share of CPES on the latest rebuild, and glad to be two steps beyond the CPES.Final bottom coat #3,now to move on to transom repair.
Next on the list is stain and varnish on the sides. March and SJRR is not far off......... |

Doc I cant wait to see that beauty once she is done.
CPES was by far the worst fumes out of the entire process. Epoxy is nothing like poly resin. When I was doing large pieces of wood I would just pour it on and let it soak in. Some pieces would drink 8 oz the first time around then 4oz the next time and then the third time barely absorb anything at all. I love that product. You can see it work its magic. Makes the grain really pretty too. |

on base coats you have 6 hours to re-apply a second coat, after that you have to scuff it so it sticks. I was just curious

So what would happen if I used warm outside in 35 degrees and let it kick then brought it into my attached garage warmed to 60 to dry. I was hoping to get some cold formula today at Wolfs in Benton Harbor but they only carried Git Rot so I passed. I will place an order with Jamestown this evening for the cold formula is using the warm in current southwest Michigantemps are out of the question.

I think as long as you store it inside where it's warm and mix it in the warm garage, give it a few minutes to kick then you could apply it outside but it takes so long to cure that it will stink up your garage no matter what once you move everything back in and close the garage up. Cpes is pretty forgiving and seems to cure in any situation with enough time. I try to coat everything outside and leave it out there until dark then do like you suggested and I move all my pieces in the garage and crank the heat overnight. Next morning all is ready to work with and most of the fumes are gone. I open the garage for about 30 minutes and it's clear enough to work in. I do lose all my heat unfortunetly but I keep the garage heat down around 50 when I'm working anyway. Make sure you clear that garage before working in there that stuff will give you a nasty headache. |

I bought cold formula CPES and was still using it when it got hot so I would put it in the fridge overnight and use it first thing in the morning. It really drank the cold stuff.

Do I dry fit the stringers, then CPES all sides, allow to dry then epoxy into place?
OR CPES the wood, then cut them to shape, allow to dry then epoxy into place? OR Cut the stringers to shape, epoxy into place then CPES them? Thanks |

Cut and fit all the wood to the final shape then CPES all sides. The end grain will really suck it up!! Then you can bed them into the hull.
