Eric, Here is my question. I am building a boat, should I buy a motor or a transmission? One rarely has the choice of one or another, it is finding the right balance. Besides what does military spending have to do with the cost of unemplyment? Nothing, bringing it up it is just a diversionary tactic to get away from a pure discussion of the merits of unemployment.
You said undernormal circumstances 27 weeks (6 months) is appropriate for unemployment compensation. normal unemployment is about 5% it is now 9+% since it is less than double probably less than double the normal term would maybe appropriate or 1 year, we are going to be over two. we have now made government the "employer" of chaice for the unemployed. The problem is the govenment does not produce anything to make income to pay thewe employees, so it has to take from those that do(businesses in the form of unemployment payments) to make payroll. This leaves less money for the business to create its own payroll. Increasing costs on business is not the way to end unemployment, in fact it is the way to increase it. Duh. follow the money, who is promoting extending benefits for the unemployeed? Those who like big govenrment and hate business. Meanwhile those unemployeed dont have to face the real dicisions about the new economy and take realistic jobs. |

Eric, My employers unemployment costs have gone from .4% of payroll to 8% of payroll in the last two years. To make the math easy lets say a company has twelve employees,or one employee equals 8% of their payroll. If this company two years ago had a plan to grow business enough to add an full time employee in two years, following their plan they hire a part time employee after year one. Unemployment costs rose an unplanned 3% of payroll that year so even with expected growth they are three percent behind. Despite this they stick it out with the part timer because they need the labor for the growth. After two years unemployment has risen by 8% of payroll and they have lost the compensation for the new employee, and can no longer afford the part time employee and have to let him go, now they do not have the labor to accommodate the growth, so revenue drops along with customer satisfaction. THe company is on its way to failure potentially costing another 12 jobs because our legislators wanted to play robinhood, steeling from the rich to give to the poor, but all they have done is create more poor.

Eric, the war like unemployment has to be evaluated on its merit and a cost vs. benefit basis. We could just as easilybe throwing money into the wind as fighting terror. B arrack has continued in GW's footprints on it despite being anti war pre-election so I am assuming there is some merit.

Greg, how could that be, we are a safer America....thats what we are fighting for isnt it?
OMH, the economy is very fragile and delicate, I dont necessarily agree with the bank bailouts, the problem i have is what would be the end result of not bailing these guy's out..you have to kick start the economy by putting money in the hands of people, keeping the unemployment money flowing is crucial to the economy....i dont really want to know what would happen if we cut off these people from unemployment, I pay into unemployment and i know it has increased. most truly cant find jobs and need the help until the cycle turns, hopefully for the better, these are the times we will remember when we are old and grey. I dont think the government no matter who is in charge wants to see the economy collapse. What I do see is more education of why we are in the position we are in and catch the little things and people are starting to realize we cant sustain or maintain the direction we are heading. The majority of the unemployed are honest hardworking people, they arnt taking the money and going down to the corner to crack up, they are paying their bills to survive to eat, but i think with that comes a sense of pride that later on in life they will appreciate and reflect on those hard times as do our grandparents who nested cash away who lived thru the depression, maybe in a sense you dont know what you have until it is gone, it will create a better society for the most part in the long run |

Eric, you want to keep the money flowing in one sentence, but we cant we cant sustain or maintain the direction we are goingin the next. Nice to have it both ways, what you say feels good but does not adress the govenmnet taking money out of employers hands in order to fix unemployment. That will never help create jobs, just like the housing bubble created lower expectations for housing prices, the unemployment crisis needs to allow lower expectations for salaries, that will not happen till we stop cottleing the unemployed. Our grand parents relied on THEMSELVES to get through the great depression, There was no governmnet safety net, thats why they feel proud. What will our generation say, I am so proud of the way I took that check for 2 years? Wow the satisfaction is overwhelming. |

unemployment was started because of the great depression, i rather see 20 billion a month dumped into unemployment rather than providing better healthcare and food to poppy growers. if i had the red button in front of me...quick exit jk, we really need to pull out of the middle east and supply them weapons for oil/ heroin....like what were use to and pull our guys and gals out of there.

Eric, I was going to say stop playing "would you rather" and stick to the merits of extending unemployment, but I began to like your idea. We could half the federal budget by having our legislators play "would you rather", we could match similar sized budget items and just give them the choice. The one they pick gets funded , the other does not. For example, Would you rather fund unemploymnet extensions or the war in Afghanistan? Would you rather fund medicare of welfare? Would you rather fund MPR or the DNR? National parks or fedral buildings? USPS or the DMV? and so on. It would immediatly take care of the budget deficit, give us a chance to see if some of the these programs are really necesary, and we would get to watch our elected officials sguirm there way through the process. |

I know the world is 1 bullet less with Madoff.
you know OMH, you hear everyday about the big busts being made about cocaine, maryjeewanna, 50...60 tons, so easily smuggled into this country, But, from a far away land, across a great big ocean, they easily seem to smuggle opiate products, ie. morphine, heroin, into this country....why is that? |

Not my area of expertise,but... I think our border and port security are underfunded and inadequate, I have to believe peope are paid off or threatend to look the other way. Could be a bigger conspiracy to allow income flows to these countries to continue. It is bad business to terrorize a country you are finacially dependant upon. If we cut the drug trade off cold they would just have another reason to hate us. |

here's the thing with people with old money, its all in a barrel and they have their hands wrapped around it in fears someone is going to come along and take it and if so they dont know how to replenish that barrel. Now on the other hand if someone came to me and took everything i owned except the clothes on my back, I would smile wake up the next morning open up the paper, get a job, and eventually re-plenish the barrel again. I dont know the hidden message here, probably the difference between greed and working for money

Eric, I never heard your thoughts on this, which to me is key.
I was just talking to a carpenter who was back to work today after seven weeks of unemployment. He said it was "To short" and that he came out ahead on unemployment becasuse he stayed home with the kids and saved on daycare, he wants to go back on unemployment but his company now has too much work. He is planning to have a carple tunnel surgery done after working a few weeks to make the work comp look legitimate and is hoping to be off for 6 months. People are milking the system because it is comfortable and its costing businesses growth opportunity which the economy desperatly needs. |

It's kinda right up there with the ones that look like they could run a 4 min mile and have a handicap plaque hangin in the windshield. They might have a old sick mommy but if she ain't in the car the plaque shouldn't be displayed.

Yes but what about the program paying rates comfortable enough to keep people on it while taking the money away from employers and thus reducing growth and employment opportunities. Can you not see the cycle this creates? We are devastating our employment situation by continually proping up the unemployeed, if they havent found a job in six months then their expectations must be too high, and they will not lower them till their unemployment expires.

He has'nt done anything wrong...yet, just stupid for voicing his plan. His work comp plan is just legit enough to get away with also. His attitude speaks volumes, the point is he was too comfortable on unemployment to look for anything else. |

OMH, have you looked at the Sunday classifieds lately? unemployment is a vital part of the puzzle to create jobs, keeps the drug dealer busy so he can buy an Escalade with nice shoes and a bone hole. really though there are many out there that need that temporary fix until they seek the right employment, you got guys that were busting 100k and are looking for those 100k jobs and after time they are starting to realize there just are'nt those type of jobs out there, they get to the end of the line and then they must take a job, re-evaluate their lives and adjust the money going out, down size and live within their means

Eric, they should figure that out in 6-12 months, why are we paying them for two years? +e are prolonging the process at the expense of economic recovery.

Looks like the Senate and the House have both passed the bill and it is headed to Obama for a signature.
Here's something interesting... My Dad and I were talking last weekend about the extension of the current tax plan and its effects on the economy. He was telling me he was watching Neil Cavuto and Cavuto had a guest on the show that falls into the "rich", business person category. The question was posed to him about how the passing of this bill might effect his strategy moving forward regarding hiring, etc. The answer was that it won't change a thing in the way he is operating the business right now. He went on to explain that although this removes some doubt as to the upcoming business climate, since it is only an extension for two years, it doesn't give him much confidence for stability past that. Changing your hiring policy for a two year period of time isn't very smart business and can come back to bite you in ther butt. I wonder how many businesses are thinking this same thing. If it is a majority, you won't see much of a change in our current situation. For me, personally, I'm glad they are staying in place because I can maintain status quo. I'm not going to run out and stimulate the economy, but I know I can continue my recent spending and saving pattern. If they had been left to expire, that budget plan would be reduced and I would be spending less to maintain the same level of savings I've been doing. |
