may be dumb question, but i cant
find a motor for my 66 mustang but i bought a lincoln continental with a 302 with 32000 miles. what if anything can i do to make that work or am i completly out of my skull. desperate fredo68

You can marinize the engine yourself if you're up to it. Some parts need to be replaced with marine parts like the distributor, starter, altenator and carb. You can probablly use some of the parts from your old motor (depending if the old motor was standard rotation). Depending on the rotation, you may have to do something with the transmission as well.

If the 302 has a 2 piece rear seal you can't use the crank out of the car, because the wick lines will pull oil out the rear. Also you need a reverse cam so the valves will open in the right order. As far as the carb goes, I have the original '66 carb that came on my boat and it's not marine, neither was the fuel pump or altenator. All you'll probably be able to use is the block and the heads. Is the original motor a 302? It's probably a 260, and you'll need a different bell housing because the bolt pattern isn't the same. If you don't know, the two top bolts on the bell housing on a 302 are 5 3/16 apart and the 260 is 5 7/8 apart.

Re-building what you have and adding a different cam, aluminum intake and doing some head work would really increase the HP and cost basicly the same maybe an extra 500 bucks if you tweak the heads a little.

ive got a 84 cutlass that we built a dart 383 stroker for. can get dart aluminum heads reasonable would the automotive heads work or strictly marine. ive got an extra demon carb, and edelbrock pro performer laying around. how radical of a cam do you recomend. and since your 30 mins from me where should i go for marine parts or just mail order. thanks a million fredo68 |

I doubt that I'm 30 min's from you since I don't live in Syracuse anymore,
you don't want to get too crazy with the cam, stay with 112 degree seperation and do a search here for cam specs and that will give you an idea what to go with. Automotive block parts are fine you just need to use the right type of piston's (hyperphudic -sp)and brass freeze plugs, I wouldn't really recommend aluminum heads, these angine really don't get hot enough and some have had issues using them. |
