There hasn't been much activity here lately (and it is a cold January afternoon). Figured I'd put some clips from last summer together.....it helps make the snow and ice a bit more tolerable. |

Nice skiin'- great handle control/placement- very smooth tumbles/ tumble up(leading hip is up) sweet! nice one foot stand up. Get your foot off the rope sooner on the back deep- you won't bounce, good use of the scarpa shoe skis.
Its 36 degrees here in California right now. Its been foggy and cold in general. My 383 stroker is in the boat and we are ironing out some kinks with the MSD ignition...should get water tested by next saturday! |

I see you have the shoulder support. Just got mine fixed this call. Capsule shift and bankart repair. How is skiing with it? |

That's because all the runs were made in front of my house! My wife yells at the tubers that come into the bay and f**k up the water!! |

I've gotten to the point that I feel like something is missing if I hop in the water without the brace (or my arm through the loop). I've done it a couple of times and usually end the run pretty quickly after I realize what's missing. The brace seems to to a great job of holding things in place but doesn't limit movement to the point that I feel restricted. I almost think it helps out on tumble turns....the handle can never get pulled up over your head. |

Too funny, Pete, I miss being home on the Mighty Miss in IA where when the tubers show up, you go to a different backwater slew. Mark, and I miss being able to ski on water where there are no "no wake hours" That is frickin communist, I swear! |

some pictures of the 2011 season..note I´m using my newly acquired BI toe hold handle...
I also bought a E-Z footer but it came with the wrong video..any tips on how to use it? does the loop goes directly attached to the boom or I need some kind of rope or rig to set the height? |

Seb, Handle goes right on the boom. You'll have to raise and lower the boom to suit the size and weight of the person in the swing. also use people in the boat for balast. Now get the girls out there and get to it.
Oh and don't forget the pictures. Happy Footin' Steve |

sometimes the EZ footer is too small/short- they are primarily for little kids. I had a custom one built by lakeelmosports. its 36" long with 12 inch lead and 24" of "V" to the handle ---so if you are teaching adults you maybe better to use your BI toehold handle and wrap some of the 5 ft line up on the boom to get it about 36 inches long(or get an extension for your EZ footer(adults may not fit inside the EZ footer if its a smaller one like I used to have)
at first keep the boom over their heads so arms go up to it. never go faster than 25 prefferably 15 to 20 max until they get good at gliding then 25 max...then move them directly to the boom. I can help you more if you need it. |

It was a short ride, the water was fine there but it was a narrow stream with lots of curves so no place to get a relaxed ride..It wasn't safe..boat also ran over some branches that fortunately were hit with the fins and did not touch the prop, shaft or strut...

man i´m so out..I guess 30 days w/o doing anything are tough. I was out yesterday and burned out after the second ride...I was able to do some tumbleturns and then I couldnt even grab the handle..So I quited before hurting me...
anyway it was a nice session. I went with a friend who used to bf long time ago..also got tired after 2º run..last time he bf´d was no less than 6 month...he got to do a mouth hold with my new handle....he even left a mark of the teeth brackets in the leather... Me I wouldn´t try that... I hope I can get some bf done on the weekend... SEE ya |

So my skiing committment/resolution for 2011 is to really get into footing this year. A goal for the season is to go backwards. I first irst learned about 25 years ago behind a glastron i/o by standing up off of a kneeboard (sneakers, vinyl Cypress Gardens vest you get the picture). I've never been really good at it, but have been able to get up 3 or 4 times per season just for kicks. I'm approaching 40 and in addition to just being fun, I'm using this to help me get in and stay in shape.
Never had much in the way of equipment, but I've recently gotten myself a boom and am in the process of setting it up for my boat. A used suit and shorts are in my future too. I've re-read most of this thread, but can't find what I'm looking for. Speed when using the boom? Isn't it supposed to be slower than longline? In the past when I've barefooted, I just never felt that I had as much speed as I wanted. Even before the freshman 15. Probably stance, technique. Will the boom allow me to get away with less speed? |

yes it will allow for slower speeds. a good rule of thumb for speed is your weight divided by 10 + 20= speed needed. using the boom and correct posture you can drop mph. i weigh 215 and very seldom go faster than 38 long line. if you are truly committed--get a good barefoot suit and padded shorts--they make the difference.

I tried last time the toe holds but I think I have to lower the boom a tad, is set as you see in my last pictures. Being to high its a little complicated to raise the leg so high..lol.
I was able to put the foot on the handle but I lost balance and dived into the water... |

Swatkinz:
The boom is a great tool. I use it over and over: for myself, for my kids, getting rookies up the first time on skis. Like fanofccfan, I like the weight formula. At 185, that puts me at 38.5. I consider that somewhat of a minimum speed for me. I can get up on the boom at 32 or 34, maybe less. When I learned to ski the boom with a 5 foot rope and handle, 36-38 was my speed. For one-foots and toeholds I like 41. Behind the boat 38 minimum, 42 to 43 for one foots and wake crossing. Sorry I have been so inactive on the thread. Between weather and a nasty sinus infection, I did not ski all of January. I went out last Friday to a Lake in the lower Sierra Mountains and skied the coldest water of my life. After the first run, my feet were dead numb. I thought. "I don't know if I will ski another run after that." I did ski more, but was hurtin'. |

in that video you hear Ron talk about glide and not needing speed ... most people compensate for bad form (plowing) with more speed ... learn to ski as slow as you can and get correct form THEN bump up the speeds and you will be a better footer
have your driver slowly drop speed off 1 mile an hour at a time and see how slow you can go...its fun and teaches you correct form- you should be able to get down in the low 20's |

Thanks for posting. I watched it like 3 times. Is Scarpa backing out of footin? He mentions a few times in the beginning that he hasn't been on the water much. After listening and watching, I've learned that I've always plowed. Even the butt slides he does seem effortless. I need more info on the glide technique. Seems like that's what I need most. |

I do not think Ron has competed in some years. I think Paul handles most of the work load at RSWS. Scarpa is being inducted into the hall of fame this year. You can go back to shoe skis or trick skis to learn better posture or "glide", most use too much speed to compinsate for poor position, you'd be surprised how slow you can go with good posture.
