How much should it cost to rebuild my 1:1 velvet drive out of my 78 nautique? I've got quotes anywhere from $400 to $650.

Those are pretty good numbers! Right in the ball park. The thing is you dont know wat may need to be replaced until you get into it. If the pump is bad then you are at the high end of the rebuild cost cause that raskel is not cheap unless you find a good used one.
Just send it to Eric he will fix you up!!
Hobby Boats can be expensive when the hobbyist is limited on their own skill and expertise.

It still pulls good. Its just the front seal keeps leaking so while I've got it out I thought I would go through it.

rebuild is a loose term, it means clean and paint and that would be in the price range your talking about..
my friends engine blew on his plow truck, I told him 1800.00 bucks, low mileage engine, swap it blah blah blah....
he found a Brunstuckian to do it for 1200.00 last week and he had it towed there....7 days later no plow truck, and he is at the 1800.00 mark in extra's already    get the hidden message? plus he lost 1000 bucks not plowing, i was willing to work the weekend to get him going

You've been with us over a year and it sounds like you didn't even go to Eric for advice and a quote?? Did you ever put the speedie sleeve in it? Keep in mind, as mentioned in the other thread on your problem that a pitted shaft may not be the only reason for the leak!!!

Send it to the guy that will do it for $400. Maybe he'll do it for less if you tell him not to paint it!!

Kalamazoo Marine Gear (Kalamazoo, MI) quoted me $850 for a complete rebuild if I took it across town to them. At this time of the year, it was a 3 day turn around. They then asked my what it was doing to merit a rebuild. I said it was not doing anything, but the rest of the boat was so neglected, it made me wonder if I could be proactive and save some summer downtime. They suggested waiting until it started misbehaving before spending the $$$ and said even during the prime time season, it was only a 5 day turn around.

I did not know Eric was in the business. Where is he located?

I have a "Cozier" Rebuilt gear for sale for $750.00 plus your old core trans and you pay shipping shipping both way's...... Or just send your trans to Eric and he will fix you up! Either way you cant go wrong!

a leak is misbehaving, lol normally im at 750.00 with the updates, and 2 to 3 day turnaround in July, when im slammed with work

I haven't put the speedy sleeve on yet , that's why I pulled it out was to put one on it. The guy I talked to said depending on what it needed it would be max $650 for total rebuild. He rebuilds everyones inboard trans around here and has a very good reputation here.
It slipped a couple of times last summer when the fluid got low while on the lake. I just want to be sure it's ok before I put it back in?

It could start with a dirty neutral..(drag in neutral) or directly slippage while under power or when slamming it to take off

Mine's been leaking for almost 4 years now. Always check fluid before leaving the dock. never EVER slipped...yet. It just annoys me to see the redish bilge. Maybe this winter...
