I might be looking for some lake front property in the next year or two and was wondering if anyone could make a suggestion for something about 4 hours maximum from the South suburbs of Chicago. Not looking for anything fancy but would like a decent size lake that is good for skiing, fishing and swimming. Would consider WI, IN, MI or possibly IL.

My brother-in-law lives on Okauchee Lake near Oconomowoc (Milwaukee), WI. He says the number of properties for sale is at the highest level ever. The economy and housing downturn has hit the lake hard and created some good deals. Might be a good time to look there.   There is a very nice area for skiing called Ice House Bay. Good fishing up there too.

You may want to check out Delavan Lake also in Delavan, WI.

I am waiting for my ship to come in (or to win the lottery) so I can buy a palatial estate on Lake Geneva

Check out Goose Lake Illinois, its about 1.5 hrs. south of the city and is an old strip mine. We bought our boat from a person who lived on the water. Pretty sweet area, completely private, there is about 6 miles of water to ski and they have a slalom course that is moved around every two weeks so owners dont have the traffic in there back yard constantly. I believe there is a 20ft limit, no wake boats.

I know a couple of folks who have properties in this private development, located near Galesburg, IL   Oak Run

I have skied/wakeboarded with them there on several occasions. On the plus side, very clean water. Cons, the usual weekend recreation boat traffic tears the lake up, some goofy lake rules.

Oak Run is definetly a decent place to ski. My aunt and uncle used to own a property there and on the week days the water was great, but as tnplicky said, it gets pretty crazy on the weekends. Its not the largest body of water, but is a fun place to boat.

Greg, I have a place in Lk James Estates 140 miles east of Lansing right down I -80 in Angola, In. Plenty of southsiders there as my neighborhood has people from Lansing,Thornton,Homewood,Chicago Heights,Schererville,Dyer,Crown Point,St. John, etc. Some places on the water, some lakeview, and most of them off the water with lake rights. Everyyhing from new homes to older trailers. Association owns about 600 ft of shoreline and uses it for docks, pavilion and swimming beach. Good fishing lake chain that is quiet on week days and busy on weekends. Pokagon State Park is there and owns a lot of shoreline. Hope you check it out. John.

John.....I just posted a thread recently about Lake James. Beautiful area and lake. So, do you see a high number of classic Correct Craft's on Lake James, being that Midwest Correct Craft was there for many years? I would love to drive my boat around that lake looking for them.

David, There are definately some out there. If I recall, the DNR said we have over 6,000 watercraft on this lake chain so there is definately a lot of boats to look at. In the thread you mentioned, as others stated the lake is beautiful and has great sandbars, it really is quiet on weekdays but weekends after about 11:00 AM its gets quite busy.

I always liked Koontz and Hudson lakes both are off the beaten path and less crowded. Have you tried Clinton lake? Its heated by a nuke plant but doesn't have any waterfront property.

Do you know if Hudson Lake has public access? I work for the South Shore and have passed it a few times, always wondered about it. As for Clinton Lake, in Illinois?

Kap, I believe I've read from the Clinton lake gathering thread that the water temp is still in the 90's near the power plant...and I believe it is in late September, where most other lakes around here would be around 70°. Don't know what it would be in the middle of winter?

Hudson lake has a nice ramp behind the restaurant as you get there. Clinton has many access ramps we usually stayed at the state camp ground and launched there. The warm side of the lake is open between April 1 and October 15 last year water temp was 77 degrees on April 2
and still in the mid 80s on October 15.

Lakehouse

I have to echo this site recommendation. Lakehouse.come has a really useful notification tool where you can set predetermined price ranges and get daily alerts to ads that fit the bill. You can specify key words (lake names, for instance) to refine the search.

We found a great deal at the end of summer 2009 using this site. Our neighbors still can't believe how cheaply we got waterfront property in their neighborhood.

If you are in the lake James area, check out Crooked Lake. They are a half mile apart -not connected- but half as busy on weekends. It has 3 basins the 3rd is awesome for sking, boarding. They both are just off the I80 / I69 intersection. Steuben county has over 100 lakes . 2.5 hours from Chicago.
