hello, I am new to the forum, and boating for the most part. my dad just gave me his old 63 american skier (super saber) and i need some guidance on what type of paint to use on the top. right now it is a very cracked and faded red, and i would like to repaint it with somthing inexpensive that will get me through the next few years untill I can afford the gel coat which I'm told is quite costly. thanks for any input

welcome to the site. you will get a lot of good advice from experienced boaters. most will tell you to wet sand and buff what you have until you can save enough to re gel coat it later. i will be doing that to a 1966
a t skier i bought recently. i still have to go to mn to get the boat! |

Jerry, It's heading for -8 tonight, I cannot imagine why you have not come up yet. I heard above freezing this weekend. You never told me what city that boat is in. If you need a stop in the Cities let me know.
63, I agree with jerry, why pay for and mess it up with paint, wet sand for now and save the money to do it right as soon as you can. |

Pics of boat? Welcome to the Family. Pete will chime in tomorrow. Don't be intimadated by his words though! Buick Universal Super Sabre V-6 ? Where's your location? Sounds good. That's kind of what I was leaning toward. Any suggestions on grit. Also the inside needs paint on the side. Is there any specific paint for that. It's got all new stringers and flooring, it just needs a little paint tlc. Thanks for the quick responses, I'm getting pumped for the summer, its supposed to be minus 5 tonight!

wet sand and buff and you will be amazed at what shows up. Do a search on this site. You will find some great info on how to do it. |

I agree with Marty that we sure need pictures!! I also agree with everyone that your first option is a wet sand and buff and then if you don't get good results, it a re gel. However, I feel you'll be really surprised at the results.
For the paint on the inside hull sides, I'd recommend Pettit Easypoxy. Easy to use. |

Just about every single one of the early ('61-64) glass boats Ive seen have had extensive spider cracking all over... so I can understand your predicament. That being said, I agree 100% with the other guys here. If you want to restore it properly, gel is the only way. I dont believe it is any more expensive than paint. Either one will be a fairly expensive undertaking to do it right- though there may be more sanding involved to get the gel smoothed out after spraying. Its definitely worth it for the superior finish though.
Do not bother with paint as a temporary fix... it will only make it more of a PITA to fix the boat properly later on. Just buff it out and enjoy the boat's "character" until you have the time and money to fix it right. |

Don't paint your deck. As others have said, you'll be amazed at how that gel will come back. I used a polyurethane porch/deck paint from Ben Moore for the insides of our Mustang. Great paint, like a Petit product, only you can bring their big paint chart home with you and pick out a color that matches really well.
