After my first outing this year I noticed I have fuel leaking from the carb. I ordered a rebuild kit for it and plan to do it this weekend.
The boat ran absolutley perfect except for the fuel leak so should I leave internal components alone and just disassemble and replace gaskets?I'm not too worried with the rebuild but I haven't touched a carb in years so any advance advice would be appreciated. Also what do you use to clean the exterior of the carb to get it to look a little better? TIA |

If your going to re-build the carb correctly then you'll need a bucket of carb cleaner to soak it in. Areosol cans won't get the job done and you'll have problems or very short lived results.

Is it just the fuel bowls that are leaking at the gaskets? If so, try tightenign the screws first. Sometimes, the gaskets can shrink and start to leak. Simply tightening the screws will solve the problem.
Otherwise, 79 is correct about the rebuild which will improve the external appearance once soaked in carb cleaner. |

The accel pump can leak also if not tight enough.

I recently rebuilt my 4160 and used a 6.5 valve. the kit I bought from DIM came with a 2.5. I got the other valve from Advance auto, they had a holley marine catalog and ordered it and a new secondary diaphram for me. I soaked the carb and all individual pieces in Carb cleaner. Buy the bucket with strainer. Worked good. I also used a flat file on the carb body to remove all gasket material. Be careful but it worked great. I did thie same to the base plate. After doing all of the disassembly and prep/cleaning I got a local mechanic that builds race engines to put it all back together for $25.00. Money well spent. i think. Runs better than ever. Holeshot is great. air fuel is about 1 1/4 turns on each side.

Alright, thanks for the tips, first thing I'm gonna try is tighten everything up and see if it stops. If so I'll do it over the winter as I'd rather not start pulling this thing apart when it's time to start using it.
I've seen the other posts about the 6.5 valve and sounds like thats the way to go so I'll get one ordered and then tackle this. Got the kit from skidim so I'll check to see what valve is in it. |

Hey Alan,
I rebuild my carb last summer. I did it in one afternoon. Really the only other carb experience I'd had was from a VW bug. Tighten everything up first and see if that fixes the problem, as mentioned above. I got the rebuild kit from the CC dealer. I also got a new metering block, but if your only fighting with a leak, you may not need the new metering block. Good luck! |

Well, just got back from a test drive with the carb rebuild and much to my delight the thing ran great. Idles beautifully, starts up instantly, no hesitation when I punch it from a dead stop and good pull right up to WOT. I can honestly say it has never run better.
This thing was well past due for a rebuild, it was filty inside and out and leaking from every gasket so hopefully we're good to go for a while. |
