Hey guys - I finally got the right material from Christines for my combing pad (take my advice & don't buy 'Nautique vinyl' from EvilBay).

Dumb me, sent the original skin to Christines' & now am not sure the correct way to trim the corners.

Don't want to trim too deep & have to scrap the material!

Any advice?

Chris

Chris;

I'll start the replies, and also wait for more professional upholsteres than I to answer as well.

For what its worth, when I did my upholstery last year, and got to corners like you are at, I just started folding the edges down around the corners. It may take a little trial and error to see what method works the best, so obviously don't permanently staple it until you have it the way you want it. You will have to fold the material over on itself as work around the corner. If you have to bunch (overlap) the material more in one area vs another, make sure that area faces the bottom.

Also, on my combing pads, there was a "welt" (round plastic cord wrapped in the same vinyl material as the combing pad, and sewn closed), which is then stapled around the entire perimeter of the pad. It adds a nice finished touch, and can also help hide any blemish or puckers around the corners. Not sure if the '89's had that though.

By the way, great looking red/white '89. One of my favorites.

Thanks for the advice Dave - After my 2nd cold one it went much better. I pulled & stapled, trimmed, unstapled, trimmed some more, restapled. Christine's provided the welting, but it was a little short. I hid that error where I don't think anyone will notice but me.

It was a fun afternoon project. I can't imagine how difficult a large complex seat would be!

Looks good to me. I did the same piece saturday and like you said, you just keep pulling around the corner until you get it to lay properly around the curve.

I did not use the welt on mine because it originally didnt come with any, but your looks really good with it on and makes me wish I had!

If you like it put it on, I've only seen one other 89 w/o it around those pads.
