Hey gang,
Looking to upgrade the tune situation in the Sport we picked up last fall. It has the stock speakers and tape deck. I was wondering what you guys prefer? Brands? Can I go cheap ie: pyle, dual etc) and will it still sound better? Should I buy deck and speakers as a kit from say overtons? Or go to best buy and get speakers seperate than the deck? brands? Just looking to get everyone's opinion. Also...no idea what size the speakers are in that puppy. I originally though 6.5 but they don't look that big. What would you say? Sorry for the lack of good pics, the boats in the shed and these are from the seller. |

The speakers are 6.5". You can upgrade the look by top mounting them or you can stick with the stock setup behind the grill cloth. As for the deck, you can go with any single din car deck if its well enclosed (your opening may be different than mine). I have a JVC with a hard wired ipod interface running to a 5 channel amp, four Polk DB series cabin speakers and an 8" Polk MM840 sub in a sealed enclosure under the bow of my 98 SN. It's what's known as a good bang for the buck setup. I could have spent more; I could have spent less. But it sounds good to me.

Sweet thanks guys! Are we sure they are 6.5s? That cover over them makes them look small so that's why I'm asking. I too like Rockford, Clarion, polk... i will check out that link and see what I come up with!

It is sweet but it isn't a marine radio is it? I'm thinking where the deck is located in these year boats that a marine head unit would be the way to go. Also, I'm not liquid and don't think I can spend that much on the head unit alone..... hmm

How much protection does that armrest offer? Any cover over it under the armrest? I know the orientation is different, but I've never had trouble with regular nonmarine units in my boats.

You know I'm not all that certain how much protection it offers. I do know that there is not a cover over the deck other than the armrest cover....

If the funds allow it, get marine gear. Automotive stuff will work for a while, but unsealed electronics don't mix too well with a marine environment. Have a look at the corrosion on any piece of auto audion
Auto speakers last a suprisingly well, and if you rear mount them they are reasonably well protected. But I can't say the same for a headunit. If it's glove box mounted, it should last a while. If it's armrest mounted, it might last one outing. All it takes is one drink and they could be cactus. |

I would have to agree however ive never heard an awesome marine grade system there decent but nothing really thumping i dont think you have a tower so monster speakers will not work but i have to say take your time and listen and get what YOU want |

The boat im talking about is our 2000 sport and it does have the flight control tower which was a factory option via previous / original owner. So... tower speakers are an option but not sure if I can dive that far in now...

Yea Chris...it's a 75th anniversary Sport. Not sure if that's the reason it has the good graphics rather than the N or what's up...
If it had the N, I don't think we would have jumped on it as fast haha Who's Joel? I want to see his ride |

I cannot stand Pioneer head units, they are so user-nonfriendly. |

Oh that's him!!! Yea they were just talking about that boat and colors and stuff in another thread...something about anniversary stuff or something?
haha to each his own Chris! I honestly hated them when they came out, but they are growing on me. I just like the classic nautique font running up the side of the boat. At Show Ski Nationals in what...06...when the Ski 196 had the "Ski Nautique" back on the side of it after a couple years with different patterns and what not Dad and I couldn't leave that boat. Thought it was awesome that they brought it back. |

You could order the 99' graphics in 2000 or go with the new "N" style, not sure if there was a cost difference.
Have the factory Polk's speakers in mine, six seasons and still working fine, the bow speakers have been soaked hard core from taking waves over the bow with novice drivers at the helm without issue. Whatever Deck you get be sure it is I-Pod compatable, ideally capable of controlling the IPod from the head unit, powering the IPod at the same time would also be a huge Plus. |

Thanks Q,
I'm not an apple fan...so...I never use the ipod that I purchased a few years back. I did have an alpine deck in my old car that I LOVED that was ipod compatible and I really liked that. But I know what you mean, if you can get it as a bonus I might as well, that way others in the boat with their crapods can shout their tunes. |

Mike I like the head units with USB input. The last one I bought had facility for a SD card. We never use the Ipod now just load up the SD card with MP3's. Leave the Ipod behind it never gets wet that way.

Lewy,
Do you get better sound quality with the SD Card vs the IPod? The IPod is awesome in that with both mine on board I have several thousand songs to choose from, just never been that thrilled with the quality, a CD sounds WAY better. |

Chris,
Never noticed any difference in sound quality with the SD card. The main problem with digital music from your Ipod or mp3's is the recording level is different between tracks. Quite often the daughters will bring there Ipods as they dont like my choice of music all the time. I find the SD card more convenient than the Ipod. I never forget it or get it wet. |

Thanks, I love it! By the way, for what it's worth, the polk speakers are marine rated. Check out their ebay store. Good deals to be had there. |

I have been replacing mine with Polk MM Series. IMO, I love the sound and clarity of the MM series. A bargain for the money, sound as good as the Memphis Sound I have on my truck. They are marine rated. They have a marine version. The only difference is that the crossover box is integrated in the back of the speaker in the marine version instead of having a separate bo. That way you don't have to worry about the crossovaer placement. The ones in boat are car, but the ones in the tower will be the marine version because of the crossover. If you can stretch your budget a little bit, is worth it. Otherwise, Pioneer sound good and priced better. The difference will be when you crank them up.

ABout the SD vs IPOD the media won't make a big diffence. Is all digital. Now the sampling rate used when you convert the wav file does make a difference. I believe I used 192kb on mine.

If and when I have to replace the DB Polks, I will spend the bucks to go with the Master Monitor series. The little 8" MM sub sounds absolutely fantastic and I am pretty convinced the the MM series speakers will be an improvement. But for the money, the DB series speakers do a very good job.
In my car, one thing I have noticed about ipod versus thumb drive is that the integration and ease of use of the menu system is much better with the ipod. Sound is the same assuming the same bitrate. |
