I just purchased a used 1992 Ski Nautique and it came with a factory original trailer. I backed it in to the driveway and noticed the wheel looked lose. I jacked up the trailer and the entire drum hub slipped right off without removing any lugs. Obviously this was a concern because I had no idea why it was not staying on. After taking it completely apart I noticed the small outside bearing was completely torn into pieces, which is what normally holds the hub on. I replaced the bearings and re-greased the bearings. I just wanted to post this because I was stumped for a while and could not find anything on it in the forums. Note to self and others, take care of your drum hubs!

Jason, Welcome to the best web site anywhere. Bummer about the bearing issue, Fortunatly you found it before it became a larger issue. I would make sure you have the same vigilance with the boat, sounds like the PO may have let some things go. I would want to check and change the oil, tranny fluid, raw water impellor, fuel filter and engine allignment for staters. It may be that it was just the trailer that was overlooked but.....

For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

It's amazing how many people get so anal over their boats and never do any preventive maintenance on the trailer bearings. Even in the snowmobile season I see so many guy's with pimped-out sleds with a trailer on the side of the road with the wheel falling off because they never service the bearings. |

Both of you are dead on. After the major trailer issue I really started to worry about the boat and took it in for a check up. Boat and engine are in great condition but the trailer was neglected from day one apparently. (I will never make that mistake now however.)

Being in Jacksonville there is a chance it was dipped in salt/brackish water, that will destroy trailer bearings real quick if neglected. Get some bearing buddy's on there now while all is nice and fresh.
Just so you don't feel alone, I bought a 1982 Mastercraft a long time ago that was only one year old and lost a bearing towing it home. |

You can’t change the wind but you can adjust your sails
