Always a boat story! Buddy hit something while pullling me yesterday. The prop is dinged up prety good, I have seen worse. The boat was shaking pretty good and the sterainf felt much different after. The shaft looks good the rutter seems fine very little play in it.
Could the prop cause this or do I need to worry about something else? Thanks. it is a 06 226 fyi |

Jay,
A bent up prop can cause quite a lot of vibration but so can a bent prop shaft. I suggest checking the shaft as well. If you haven't seen the shaft alignment video yet, take a look at it. It has some footage of checking the shaft. Then, get the prop over to a prop shop for a tune up. If you don't have one handy, I suggest Delta. When you get the prop back, make sure you lap it to the shaft. |

Jay - We hit a submerged log last year & amazingly it bent the shaft but did not damage the prop. Had significant vibration.
I was able to straighten the shaft (had .009 inch run out) but had to remove it to do so. |

I've also just gone through this would procedure... also check that the strut is not bent (check that the shaft is not binding in the strut bearing). Is the prop (shaft) easy to turn?

With my bad luck with prop damage I think I'm qualified to say... Absolutely, it can cause major vibration!! I would not run it if its causing a serious vibration.

The Prop Shop just outside Seattle is great too. I just had my 4-blade fixed (wife hit the concrete boat ramp) and they had to straighten it, weld on material on two blades, then do a full polish. It was about $140.

this bent shaft reminds me recently of a shaft "which i normally normally wont do" its on a duo prop Volvo outdrive, it was out .065, i put it on v-blocks in the press and gave it a press, it popped right back within .0005, that was with one press on it.
i called the guy, which i drove 45 minutes to pull the outdrive, tore it down, complete reseal and air check, remember the seal kit was at a cost of 325.00 and will re-install with alignment. the boats value is around the 200k mark. I told him it was going to be a thousand bucks....he *************** his pants and started giving me a real hard time, these are the guys that make me numb to working on boats, I said you know what, look at it as how much I saved you, he got a price from the marina to do the job and it included a 972.00 new shaft, but wouldnt give me the exact figure. I dont know why i write this stuff, maybe just to give an idea of how much i hate the business end of thiongs |
