hey sorry guys for my poor wording. i removed the entire rudder assembly and the bolted through hull set up. Then cleaned the old 5200 off the fiberglass and then put that back together with new 5200. after that set up i put the rudder back in and ran into the spacing issue. i used three packing rigs 3/16 and i have a thin washer as well, but i do have some verticle movement. fron the bottom of the boat you can see about 1/4 inch of the rudder shaft, the rudder itself does not contact the base. i will take a picture in a few minutes. how do you post pictures in this forum?

Absolutely! Since it doesn't see the constant high speed RPM's like the prop shaft, you can tighten it quite a bit. In fact, the tightness of the packing in most cases will hold the rudder shaft in the vertical position. I've seen the rudder in the same place vertically after years of service and there's still a gap at the spacer on top. |

That is one clean gas tank. The packing nut for the steering can be a tighter than than the packing nut for the drive shaft.

The 5200 caught my attention too! Jared, where did you use it? The spacer/washer/bushing on top of the port packing nut will take up some of the vertical clearance. However, depending on the position of the packing nut due to the amount of packing, it will never be the same thickness. It's not meant to be a tight precision fit anyway. |

What exactly did you 5200? That shouldnt have been necessary unless you removed and reinstalled the port? The rudder itself does not require any sealant.
What youre describing is somewhat normal. There is a small bushing/spacer that Greg mentioned, but it wont take up the full 1/4" gap. I dont really care for the vertical slop in the rudder, but it does seem to be pretty typical on CC's. Ive considered adding a bushing between the packing nut and the tiller arm to get rid of it. |

It's hard to see, but there's a thick washer/spacer under the arm. It's not 1/4" though.

i re- packed and installed the rudder took the steering off, cleaned and new 5200. i used three rows of packing and pulled the rudder up all the way. attached the steering after the packing nut went on, then replaced the nut that holds the steering arm on. I made the packing nut hand tight, and when i released the steering arm the rudder fell 1/4 of an inch. I seem to have about 1/4 of an inch of vertical movement in the rudder does this seem correct? if i tighten the packing nut up the rudder stays up. any thoughts. am i missing a spacer?
