I replaced the whole surge brakes on my double axle mastercraft trailer all is good except for one drum is getting hot. I took the wheel and hub off and adjusted it all the way in but that still wasn't enough I can turn the wheel but it still scrapes. Can I let it go and let the shoes wear so that they don't scrape (I was told some noise is normal)or do need to have the drum turned (but then I need to take the dust seals off hard to find replacements)? any ideas would be greatly appreciated

I'll resist the MC jab and say that brake parts are cheap when you consider the job they do. 'Whole', if I get your meaning, should include drum turning or replacement.

Did you replace the wheel cylinders?

Ok I took that wheel off and put it back on all was OK... then all the brakes locked up and I took it all apart and relized that I had installed the brake away cable latch on backwards. so i now need to bleed them and try again. I replaced master cylinder and all the drum brakes with backing plates, shoes etc but not the drums they looked good . so we will see. luckly i caught it when the brakes locked up and it did not get too hot... I knew I was leaving myself open for jabs with a nautique on a Mc trailer but it is function over fashion got run what ya got

I recently replaced the backing plates (complete with shoes, springs, and wheel cylinders), hubs, and bearings on my MC trailer. Still had a problem with the hubs not spinning freely which led to over-heating the brakes. Took it to a trailer repair shop to discover that the axle was bent. They put the proper bend back into the axle which solved the problem. If you have tried everything else then a bent axle may be the problem.

Bill - Was the spindle bent in relation to the flange (mounting for the backing plate)? Just trying to understand this failure mode. I was noticing today that my tire seemed to be leaning in - may have loose bearings.

They would have to be extremely loose to lean your wheel.
I would get in there and check for bearing failure if your wheel is leaning. |

Not the spindles, the axle itself was not at the proper camber. The fix was for them to remove the axle and put it in a press to get the proper camber. One of the indicators of the brake problem was that the inside of the tires were wearing more than the outside. From what I learned it is highly unlikely that a spindle would be misaligned without catastrophic failure. If the bearings are tight and the wheels are off camber, like you describe, you may have a problem? |

I tightened up the bearings 1 notch. I'll look for the camber again we we go boating tomorrow (I noticed it in the mirror). If it is still present, I will probably leave it.
I haven't hit anything so it must have always been there. The tire will rot out before I wearout the tread on the inside corner. |
