1997 Loose Throttle Lever?

I have a '97 Nautique 196 and the throttle lever seems more loose than when I bought the boat new. The 'slop' is only when in neutral. Once you're in gear it seems fine but when it neutral you can move the lever a fair amount forward/back (+/- ~1/2") and in/out (+/- ~1/4"). Is there an adjustment for this, or is the throttle/shift mechanism just worn? The boat only has about 450 hours.

I tried removing the small philips screw from the center of the fast idle button and that didn't do anything in regard to disassembly. It looks like to get access to the back you have to remove the pad the lever is mounted to. This is no problem, I just don't want to rip into it unless the slop can be adjusted out. I hate spending two hours tearing into something only to find out that there is nothing that can be done except replace the part.

Any advice would be appreciated...

I had the same problem with my 1998 that I just bought there is a small allen set screw on the bottom of the lever just tighten that up.   I also found a loose screw on the back side of the throttle assembly under the deck (located in the center of the throttle assembly) Hope this helps

I checked that allen at the bottom and it is snug. Looking underneath at the back side I noticed a large straight slot screw in the middle. To turn it I would have to remove the assembly from the side of the boat. So are you saying there is some adjustment on the back that could be leading to this slop?

While you are messing around tightening the assembly, you shouls also check your pivots. They wear out, and will put a quick end to likely the nicest day of the summer if you shear one. About $2 worth of insurance.

Great idea. Where can I buy these 'pivots'? I hate to have my boat down for more than needed so I would like to have them on-hand before I tear into it.

Not familiar with the actual problem, but as far as tools to access the screw...

I have a little Husky Brand set I got at Home Depot a while back. It's similar to this, but even a little more compact:
SideHandle Ratcheting bit driver

It's kind of like a gearwrench but designed to hold philips head and flat head driver "bits." It can also work on some small nut drivers.

You might be able to get in there with something like that without taking it all apart.
