I've got a big problem for anyone that can help. I sprayed gelcoat last week and expected some orange peel, the problem is I got way more than I expected! My thought was to knock it down as smooth as I can get it and spray one more coat. Anyone out there with some experience that can help me out? I would sure appreciate some good advise!!! I used Valspar with a Prestek additive. The first coat looked beautiful. I'm not sure what went wrong!!!!!!

Don't expect gel to spray like paint no matter what you add to it. Hard block wet sanding the orange peel of is the norm. Pictures??

Yea, I know, lots of sanding!!! I really would like to find out what I did wrong, I think that it should've layed out flatter than it did. I'll get some close ups for you to look at, probably not till tomorrow(BOAT IS AT MY IN-LAWS).

Ed,
What equipment did you use to spray it? Ether a airless or conventional with a pressure pot? What fluid tip did you use? One recommended by Valspar? |

Pete,
I used two different guns, a G100 Dump Gun, and then switched to a gravity feed with a 2.5 nozzle. I finally figured out what went wrong. It took me three different days to complete because I was working on it before work, and didn't sand the cured gelcoat enough each time to get it to lay down. I might have to completely sand it and do it all over, because I have bigger concerns now. It might delaminate!! |

Ed,
As long as you are using the Valspar, take a look at their gel site. They have some pretty good instructions on spraying as well as the mil. build needed. |

Pete,
Thanks for talking with me on this, and for going to the Valspar website. I'll check it out before I make anymoe mistakes. I just want this damn thing as close to perfect as I can possibly make it. I guess I better slow down and take my time. I really wanted to have it in the water in June, it might still be possible, but if it doesn't happen then thats the way it goes! |

Ed,
I'm surprised you were even able to get the gel through a gravity feed without lots of reduction to lower the viscosity. What's the Prestek? I've never heard of it and can't find anything about it. Is it a spraying additive to reduce the gel? Valspar does state not to reduce it's gel coats. |

Pete,
I spelled it wrong, it's acctually Prestec. It's mixed 50/50 with the gelcoat. It does thin the gel coat without changing it's color. It allows the gelcoat to cure to a sandable finish. The theory is(if it's applied correctly)that you basicaly have a walk away finish after application. 1000 grit with a medium cut polish and you're done. The guy I bought the gelcoat from, A.J. at Sher-Fab Unlimited felt bad that he didn't give me more info , but that wasn't his fault. I'll do what I've got to to make it look nice! I'm very determined!!!! I love that boat and can't wait to put it on the water! |

I joke with our painter daily, I told him that im putting a big excuse board on the front of the paintbooth for him....its real easy to screw up a paintjob....but what i think a close to perfect paintjob boils down to is patience

Ed,
Downsize your pictures so they will fit on site. You can use one of the web photo site to do it if you don't have the program. Everyone would love to see the results. pbrainard@shalestamping.com How to post pictures with photobucket by Randy in Ohio |

Look'n great! Now get it trimmed out and in the water. What did you use for a coating on your deck hardware and what kind of prep? Sandblast? |

I did the entire boat and keel, the bottom looks brand new. I was worried about the delamination because when I initially sprayed it, i sprayed, let and it cure three separate times. The gelcoat that I used was supposed to be sprayed completely in one setting. I used Valspar with a 50% Prestek additive. I had to sand it completely down and start over!! I was very disapointed in myself for making that mistake. I also had to buy a new gelcoat gun. The original gun I bought was the GS100 dump gun. It's a great gun, but not for a re-gel application. I ended up buying a gravity feed gelcoat gun with a 2.5mm nozzel for $94.00. Im into the job for just about $800, when if I would've done it right and bought the right gun in the first place, I would be a about $400! I hope my experience will be able to help others!! Let me know if you need help, the pictures I posted are from two days after I re-shot the gelcoat!!

Brian,
I forgot to mention, I've got about two full days of sanding into it, and about six hours of spraying the gelcoat(after my mistake and some beers in-between of course). If I were to do it over again, I would've sprayed a couple of gallons of polyester primer and then the gel. That was the reccomendation that I didn't follow. I think that the primer runs about $65 per gallon. Also, Prestec is an additive that really simplifies the process. If you cant find Prestek, Duratek(i think that's the correct spelling)is the same thing. Have it mixed 50/50 with the gelcoat and spray it. One gallon covers about 84 square feet, you will ant to get it 20 - 30 mils thick. Anything over 30 will make it brittle. Two gallons should give you the coverage that you need. Also, i can give you the make and model of the gun I bought, it's very simple to use. One thing also that I learned is that you don't want to use a sweeping motion when you are spraying. Like you'll hear people say, it is definitely not like spraying paint. You want to keep your arm straight, maintain the same motion throughout, and keep your finger on the triger until you are done with the area of application. Sweeping will create a heavier than normal orange peel. If all goes well, you should get almost a walk away finish. Go straight to 1000 grit wet sanding and 3M finess it pollish(or a medium cut of some sort) 24 hours later. |

Brian,
Thats correct, if you use the prestec additive, spray everything on in one setting up to a max 30 mils. I totally reccomend this for the di it yourselfer! If you shoot in coats, you will not use ant additives in the gel coat. the gelcoat will cure to a tacky surface after about three hours. You will probably shoot that twice. On the third coat, you will add your wax additive for your final coat. Prep: Sand the surface of your boat with 180-220 grit. get all the wax and or paint off of the surface. Use acetone or alcohol and make sure there is no contamination, and the you're ready to go!!! |

Wow!!! Ed that boat looks GREAT ~ ~ Man that thing is sharp!!!
I'm not a body and paint guy but you make it sound soo easy. I'm tempted to buy a kit and spray a dead bayliner or somthing for practice. Any tips on metal flake? |

Michael,
You know, I'm not a paint and body guy either, I did screw this thing up the first time. I then asked quite a few questions and didn't retry until I felt confident that I could do the job, and it worked out well! I did read that you will want to shoot metal flake with a larger tip, like a 3.5mm, and I think that would be on your last pass as well. If you're looking for a gun to do the job, GS makes both of the guns that I have. |
