That's actually pretty creative,I think thats the U Verse crew.The only thing their doing right is the fact their wearing boots.Back in the day when John and I started we went to pole climbing school,ladders and gaffs, during our installation training,one way or another you learned and were helped thru it.I went to installation school in the am and pole climbing in the pm. Now days it's video taped and you do nothing but pole climbing as your first training.If you don't pass,your out the door, no wasted effort on the companies part.In the past 34 years I have used gaffs about 2 times,they must make you use them as some sort of initiation. Steve keep your cell phone on you when you use that bucket,I got stuck in mine a few weeks ago- it went every where but down!

been there ... done that!  luckily, I was putting the 8 foot dia.. Christmas wreath I made for Pam, on our old barn. I was able to squeeze thru one of the missing barn boards, into the haymow...
I thought there should be a relief valve on the unit to let it down by gravity..never found anything.. I have considered making a rope ladder to drop over the side..
btw, you truck is a bit prettier than my old Ford van! |

That pic is a few years old Steve.Never have seen any with a valve.With a bucket everyone's either been stuck or is going to be
and just about everyone has a story about shimmying down the boom! Took about 3 hours to get me sorted out.Had to get another bucket to get me down and then for one of our mechanics to come out and fix it,since I couldn't move it with the boom up. The solenoid is held on with a plastic nut and the threaded part of it actually rusted off,the fix was a cable tie!

Now-a-days a lot of guys 'washout' in pole climbing school. Not quite as easy as it looks. Back in the day...like Gary said...you were helped thru. But in my case I had a 18 year old wife and a 1 year old baby at home...no way I was gonna not make it. I had an underground truck Pete with all the bells and whistles. But my partner the Moe-man had a bucket like Gary's. So we were ready for anything. But I was just the oppisite from you Gary..I used my gaffs right up to the end. To lazy to carry that ladder. The young guys thought I was crazy. But when I came up if you didn't climb the older guys called you a 'ladder lineman' and not in a very nice way. And back then all you wanted to do was 'fit in' with the old guys. Not like now. When I left the garage there was very little respect for old guys...the new ones, with very few exceptions, just wanted what you had.

Steve, chances are that you have A counterbalance valve on the cylinder. Just backing off a relief wont drop your bucket.If the counterbalance valve iis adjustable, backing it off would lower the bucket but make sure to set it back to where it previously was.
