I have a '93 Ski Nautique and absolutely adore it. I've noticed that it's getting progressively harder to steer each season though. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong? Or what I need to do to fix it? Thanks!

You need to replace the steering cable. Verify your rudder and helm are ok once you disconnect the cable, but it is going to be the cable.
$200-250 and an hours worth of work.   Very easy repair.

The cable is right under the main console right? and after I disconnect, I'd just try to move the rudder?

Yes, under the dash, behind the steering wheel. It also attaches to the tiller arm on the top of the rudder. Disconnect both, turn the wheel, and rotate the rudder. My guess is they are both fine. When you get the new cable, attach a wire or rope to the old one and remove. Not sure which direction is easiest on your particular boat. I think pull out from the front. This will give you a fish line to pull the new one through. You will have to open your clamp block around the metal tube. To set the new one in place properly, spin your free steering wheel lock to lock, and figure out center, make sure your rudder is centered, and attach, then tighten your clamp block back down.

Also, if you have to remove/replace the helm, remember not to hang it upside down or you will have a pretty embarrassing first outing.

I have a '92, not sure on your '93, but mine as a zirk grease fitting on the rudder. Don't just buy a new cable.... I was having the same issue, found that zirk fitting, behind the rear bilge pump, gave it a couple squirts of grease and its like butter now, cost me nothing... did it in 15 minutes.

You can disconnect the cable at the rudder too... check to see if its the rudder that's sticky or the cable. I hate to just buy and replace parts when it might not be the problem. Just sayin'...

My rudder is my next project. This came up recently too, just haven't had time lately.

Mine is one finger operation when the boat is not moving or just idling along forward. As soon as I get on plane the wheel gets pretty stiff. I think it's the additional pressure of the prop wash on the rudder that makes the steering stiffer.

My cable in my snakeboat is about shot. I need to replace it. Have had one on hand for over a year, just have not got to it. My shakedown run after my strainer seal to impeller issue, told me it got worse...

I have a 1997 Ski Nautique open bow and need to replace the steering cable. Does anyone know the part number from Teleflex that is the correct one? Many choices.
Thanks for the help.
Thanks
