Well we have got the rudder out troubleshooting our hard steering issue. Well it is easy to see that it is the steering cable. While I have the rudder out I'm planning on repacking the seal. It currently has three wraps. I'm wondering if someone could "steer" me in the right direction on the packing material and where to get it. Does anyone think we should do the prop shaft packing as well?

Skidim.com (Discount Inboard Marine) is one place to get what you need.

I would suggest replacing both, especially if you do not have any idea of when it was last done. If installed correctly, it should last several years without needing to be replaced.

Due to the age of the boat, It might not be a bad idea to re-seal every last single piece of underwater hardware.

Of coarse, I have a pent-up hatred for leaking boats.
