I live in a semi rural area with forest preserves not too far away.
A couple years ago the village was able to cull the herd of deer. That was until the "Bamby" lovers got involved!!! If they could only see the emancipated condition of the herd, they may have a different opinion?? A doe just dropped a fawn in my front yard and that's within 40' of a county road!! The doe had a hard time walking let alone the fawn which is a "given" after a birth but still, both did not look to be in the greatest shape. I've given up years ago trying to keep my own yard planted with some decent plants - the deer just come in and have a "field day" with the "salad bar"!!! I know the deer population is a problem in many areas. It's a tough issue with our local municipalities trying to make everyone happy!!! |

Pete, did you mean emaciated? I think most are emancipated?
They're everywhere and becoming a serious road hazard. They come right up in our backyard here...then I discourage them with a pellet gun! --for the bunny huggers, that's a well placed shot into a tree in front of them. |

Woke up one morning to the dogs staring out the bedroom window face to face with a deer. Total of 13 of them milling around the backyard. Out here in the sticks the locals don't worry about limits so they clean them out pretty good when the season opens, the herd is actually a little slim this year.

I live in city limits and don't have a problem with deer, but my parents who live an hour away are over run. There are dead deer on the side of the road, they eat all the plants as Pete mentioned , and none of them have a freaking job so I say open season! My favorite idea is to nail em with paint ball guns so you know when you have one coming back. If I was him I would bag a few every year and butcher them.

I guess if they were emancipated, there wouldn't be an open season on them. Heck, they may soon have property rights.

A lot of towns that don't allow hunting have a deer problem. Do you have lyme disease out there?

Yep we have most of the tick diseases here. The ticks are worse wherever there are a lot of deer.

Never saw any deer here until 1973.Now like the rest of you,we're over run.Nothing sets the Mrs off more than one biting off a flower she's planted and then spitting it out.A number of years ago 2 got hit in front of the house at 3am.Police were at the door to let us know they had to put the one down that ended up right next to the house. She tells them if you see any others, you can shoot them too.I guess contraceptives are the answer, anyone on welfare and not working has to go out during rutting season and put condoms on the bucks

Regarding th road kill, at least "up north", the authorities notify the correct people who are in need of the basic meat.

Or maybe they could teach the doe's to just go out and blow a few bucks now and then. I gave the DNR access to the land behind my house to thin the heard 2 summers ago. I arrived home at dusk, heard five shots ring out as I was getting out of the truck. I dont know how many they got but fourteen streamed across my yard that they did not get. definitly helped , we see far fewer now. |

Pete, Will County had a deer culling last fall. They accepted applications for local "sharpshooters." All applicants had to pass a background check and pass some sort of test. The original plan was to kill 330 deer, but was later reduced to 185. Supposedly, all of the meat was supposed to be donated to local food banks.

You could just introduce wolves. That's a hot topic in my state.

The deer here are getting far worse every year. The road kill lately is more like autumn as far as qty. Coyotes have become crazy here too. Even in the metro areas. I set out bait and am headed back to try and call a couple in tonight. Heard them in my hayfield last night at sunset.
Brad, sure is topic out there. Been following it for a couple years as it affects our cabin. Are they allowing a hunt again this year? Or are all the greenpeace types squawking too loud? |

one repellant ive heard of that keeps the deer away from the garden, is a motion sensor hooked to a garden hose and sprinkler. one of the barmaids from Rico's about a month ago hit a deer with her v-rod (bike), broke her shoulder and wrist, just had the pins removed on Monday.
i have noticed more than usual amounts of dead deer on the side of the freeway |

I heard they were going to allow another wolf hunt which is good because these things breed like rabits. I can see both sides of the argument regarding wolves. 1: they are not a game animal so, coming from a hunting family, it just doesn't seem right to hunt them (unless you like dog) 2: They are not only an already healthy herd of elk and deer but they are killing livestock as well. My opionion is they never should have re-introduced them in the first place. |

The last several years we have seen a slight drop with the deer in our area (southwest lower michigan) but a drastic rise in the coyote population.
