Engine hesitation

Finished the partial restoration of a 1967 Mustang (new floor, stringers, seats, etc.) and have had the boat in the water running.

The engine has poor hesitation on acceleration. It is a 302 Ford. It usually hangs around 2,500 rpm's and will then run up to 4,800. The time it hesitates varies. Usually once it gets to 4,800 it holds although it has sputtered back down to 3,000 or so.

I am assuming fuel delivery problem or carburator. I am not a carb expert though and was hoping for some guidance.

As for information on parts in the boat.

1. 3/8" fuel house (new)
2. new carb (mixture screws a turn and a half out)
3. new canister style fuel filter
4. i put a primer bulb just to insure fuel to the carb at first key turn
5. new gas tank
6. new fuel pump
7. new fuel rail from pump to carb
8. timed at 10 degrees (I have not confirmed firing order but based on the fact that it runs great when it goes I am assuming all plugs are on right).

I guess that is it. Any help would be appreciated.

check the accel pump, but you may have a mechancal advance issue causing your problem. Have you check out the distibutor and ignition system? point's style or electronic?

point's . . not a engine person and the thing is so old I figure if I do to much touching it is going to break (I know that sounds stupid, as it is broken now, but anyways).

how do you recommend I check the accel pump?

Find a decent mechanic to help you out.

Where are you located?

I would say you need to upgrade the ignition system and that will take care of 95% of your problem, but we do need to check a couple of things first. Do you have a digital camera where you could take pictures then post them on photobucket for us to see, so that we guide you down the path of performance.

Ordered a new electronic distributor from DIM.(conversion kit was not available for my distributor). I will take a picture next chance I get and get it to you. Should have the part later this week and will let you know what I find.

you could have saved over a hundred bucks if you would have bought it off of summit racing instead of DIM for the same part.

Thanks for the wisdom on the savings. DIM has been great to me which I will elaborate on in another post. Spending a little more to keep it in the loop of inboard service businesses works for me.

Well after almost a month I can now add new distributor, electronic conversion kit, and plug wires to the mix.

The boat is running really good but there is still a very slight hesitation at 3,000 rpm's. Now it will power through this hesitation (before I had to back off to that RPM and then reaccelerate). Probably would only notice it on barefoot starts, etc.

Am I being too picky for an almost 40 year old boat or is there something else I should check. I looked at the carb and the accelerator pump seems to be working properly (also did not see any adjustment).
