learning to barefoot

Hey Seb, couldn't pass on your post. Been footing like crazy around here! Posted 8 big sets over the weekend. Just got out of the water today. All told, the weather has been REAL crappy in CA up to a couple of weeks ago. Today is the first hot day (94 deg. F) since last year. Real late start to the warm weather.

I have some video, but have not taken the time to edit and post, so SacFooter is behind. I promise a video post this week.

The 8 man double boom banana boat run 2 days ago was the only footing outside of ski shows I've done in about 5 weeks. So, basically nothing this spring, too much working on boats, lifts, equipment.

You shoulda come and picked up your stuff in person...me and Eddie had the lake to ourselves again Saturday. Great footing.

BTW...did your stuff catch up with you?

As to the 8 man boom ride...we did that at Norris quite a few years ago when one of the guys got a new boat. Seems to me it was in the early 80's. I don't think I have a picture of it but I know my brother does. Hopefully he will see this and get one on here.

well first... do you already barefoot?
or are you trying to learn for the first time to barefoot and all you have is long line? (no boom?)

Eric, Sorry I left Tims before seeing your boom run, but good start. The natural progression of things would be to do what you did directly on the boom, then learn a deep water start with a short line (5-feet) off the boom, then move to long line. Going from where you are to long line start is a big jump, but not impossible. I would recommend getting a boom or finding a friend with a boom and working in small steps, but I am not discouraging you from going right to long line, but it will be harder. Just going on your feet will be harder long line than holding on to the boom, so you should try to get the feeling of footing long line before trying to start that way. Perhaps dropping a ski or standing up off a kneeboard or wakeboard. Again, starting deep water starts at this point is a big step but doable. First step would be getting comfortable in a three point stance (riding on your butt with your feet on the water, like you did to stand up on the boom.) Good luck with it.

Dont rule out long line and dropping a ski. That's how us oldtimers learned before barefoot suits and booms and kneeboards.... Find an old slalom ski, take off the heel cup and go from there.

I'll see if he has a kneeboard laying around. I'll probably try a deep water long line start just for kicks.

use a non stretch rope...75' and go for the kneeboard or step off of a ski, have a positive "can do" attitude and you'll do it and have a blast

Learning Kneeboard and deep starts is much easier with a skilled driver.

I learned to step before I learned to deep... does that make me an oldtimer too?

Im not sure I would recommend trying to step off longline if youve never done it before. I learned on the boom first, then 5', then LL- and I still get nervous every time I kick a ski. I certainly wouldnt teach anyone that way. If you dont have a boom, Ill cast another vote for a kneeboard start- just have the driver go real slow (12-15mph) until youre outside the wake- and then roll the speed up nice and slow. Make sure you bring your feet all the way back to your a$$ when planting, same as I told you on the boom.
