Anyone have any good/bad knowledge on Hurricane Deck Boats - I need something else (in additon to my CC) for taking the kids/wife out with friends to lay around and hang out. I came across a Hurricane deck boat year 2000 model 198R with a Mercury 90hp OB. Did some googling this morning and came up with a little info, but was wandering if anyone on CCFan has direct experience

Mark, I drove a Hurricane deck boat many years ago. See quite a lot of them on the water. Pretty sturdy boat.
You may want to make sure that the 90hp is enough motor. Load it up with wife, kids, coolers etc when you test drive (if you can). See how she does with it loaded like you are going to use it. What is the max HP rating for that boat? I had six people in my Sport this weekend...may have to borrow that Hurricane next time |

I've got a cousin with an older one. I'm not sure of the year and don't know if they ever went composite on the stringers. Yup, his has got a bad case of the rot. Wow, I'd hate to have to split the hull and deck on that thing to do a stringer job!!

Jim, I hear you on the HP - it is rated for 150 and the 90 seems marginal to me. I am just getting tired of taking 10lbs of stuff in a boat capable of only holding 5lbs. 3 kids are getting bigger and the stuff they want to take on the water is unbelievable right now we tote a Jr. wakeboard, wake skis, Jr. skis, adult skis, and a kneeboard to satisfy everyone. Thankgoodness that most of the time our friends are with us and they have a pontoon.
Pete, from what I found googling an independent report on the boat said the quality/ride was good and that the stringers were "PT wood encapsulated in foam for positive buoyancy" this is almost the exact quote. The top deck is then fastened with a lip over design sealing the inner hull from water with s/s screws 8"oc and then a bumper pad over this at 8"oc theoretically sealing the top lid every 4"oc to the bottom hull. I might just save the money and tell the kids they get to ride one toy per outing. |

My neighbor has one, maybe a 2007, probably a 20-21 footer with a 130hp OB (rice burner ). Have driven and even slalomed behind it ((2) feet in 215lbs), slow pull but got me on the water. Overall it appears to be a very well built boat which he has had almost no problems with, even has a retractable ski pylon.

Hurricane was the first deck boat brand I ever remember seeing. They should have had it right by 2000. Deck boats are the minivans of boats. no one brags about owning one but they will do a lot of things well. 90 does sound a little underpowered for a boat rated for a 150. especially for someone used to driving a CC.

For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.
