    Posted: July-29-2011 at 12:13am
I saw the topic earlier "vibration when accelerating" and searched around to find answers and not much luck. I have somewhat the same issue and have a few questions. I hit a rock or hit the bottom the other day taking off in what I thought was plenty deep water. From then on I felt a pretty strong vibration regardless of speed and pulled a boarder and the speed would fluctuate just a little while pulling him. I pulled the boat out and examined the propeller. It has a small ding and looks like one of them is bent slightly. I rotated by hand and the shaft turns freely and looks straight but have not done any tests. Can a bent propeller cause that much vibration??? Is it ok to take it out with this vibration until new one comes in. Any tips on what to search to find ways to check shaft straightness? Thanks alot!

Ryan, a small ding and a bent blade does not necessarily mean a bent shaft. Yes, you should have the prop re-built. Site sponsor, Delta Propeller has done a couple of mine over the years. About a week turn-around and a hundred bucks or so.
It will cause vibration the way it is and I would not run it that way. I would definately have it fixed. Good idea to have a spare prop for just these occasions. Personally, I would have it fixed, or put on a new prop and run it up and see how she does. Check the shaft if you still feel there is unusual vibration.

A bent prop can and will cause vibration. Try 'runout' or 'dial indicator' for your search.

How far would you drive your car with a new vibration? A slight vibration shouldn't hurt much, but a bad vibe can make a mess.

Well I barely hit the bottom so I am almost positive my shaft is fine. I was just wondering if I should park it or else I will really mess it up. I am ordering a new prop. from delta tomo but i was just hoping I wouldn't be out of commission for the weekend

I'm surprised TRBenj didn't pick up on this one as he is one of the main guru's when it comes to props. I didn't think the 88's came with a 1:1.23 tranny.I didn't think they went to those til 89.

As far as prop selection, the standard prop for that year was a Fed 13x13. If your a wakeboarder then the 542 seems to be the prop of choice for that. If skiing is your primary use of the boat then the 540 is the way to go.

I'd say it's possible you have a 1:1.23 (PowerPlus). Maybe you have a late 88. Do you have a muffler and a single hole exhaust? It seems like all of those things came together. Also, if you motor sits relatively level, then that's another indicator that you could have the PowerPlus transmission.

If you have the Power Plus you really don't want the 540 and you definitely don't want the 542, which is an even lower pitch. Those are meant for the 1:1 transmissions. Your engine would be spinning waaayy too fast. Acme's page is here: ACME Ski Props

Hopefully TRBenj or other prop guru will weigh in. Worth talking to Delta or SkiDim if not.

I have the 14X16 stock prop which I am told came on the 123/1 tranny. Talked to acme and they suggested the 654 or 1792. They said I prolly have a late 88

The 654 and the 1792 are very much on the small side for the 1.23 boats. The 2001 hull runs quite a bit faster than the 90+ SN's, so they tend to need larger props to keep the revs in check. Unless you load the boat down with a substantial amount of ballast exclusively, then I would suggest something a bit steeper. With a prop that short (14.25-15" of pitch), you'll give up a lot of top end speed and turn quite a bit more RPM at all skiing speeds than youre used to. You'd have a wicked holeshot though! For a good recommendation, tell us a bit more about how you use the boat, as well as what type of performance you typically saw with that 14x16 (before it got banged up).

There were no 1.23:1 boats built in 1988, to my knowledge. Ive seen one or 2 around, but they were retrofitted with a LH motor and the newer tranny. PCM and CC marketed the whole "Power Plus" package in '89, which combined the reduction transmission with the large single outlet muffler. I suspect your boat is either a '89, or the 1.23 powertrain was added later. Pictures would likely tell the whole story.

I tore my 540 all to hell yesterday. I dont think it is fixable, and bent the end of shaft. I had some some serious vibration going on.

It says 88 on the title and 123/1 on the tran. Maybe it was added later. I dont ski at all only wakeboard. I never really go over 30 mph so I think the 1792 will be good. I plan on having 1200 lbs. ballast plus riders. Its a RH rotation as well.

The props on most CCs tend to be right hand. How that end is achieved depends on engine/transmission combos as TRBenj states above.

A picture of your muffler/mufflers and rear exhaust outlet would be interesting/helpful as well. If you have only a single exhaust outlet, I believe that would confirm you have an 89 (model) at least.

But, as long as you have the 1.23:1 transmission, the propeller recommendations given above hold true.

He could have had a new bobtail/tranny installed by previous owner maybe. I have heard people do that if they have blown the engines but def post pictures of engine and tranny.

It's doable in Microsoft Paint, although there are better tools probably.

Just go up to "Image" then choose "Stretch/Skew" then give both the vertical and horizontal the same percentage. Try 75% or so to start. This will make the picture size and file size smaller.

Looks like a '88 to me, though there are a lot of things that previous owners did, which deviate from the way it came from the factory. Im sure the engine/tranny combo is one of them.

This may be another dumb question... If I wanted to get rid of the maroon stripe how hard would it be? the previous owner said he painted it. But it could be gel coat right?

That maroon stripe is not original- so its most likely been painted. To remove it, you either need to use a paint stripper or sand it off.

Is it possible that the original gelcoat stripe is underneath? I would really like it to be all white.

The original gel coat is probably underneath it, but it's also probably the same color. If you can find a scratch in the paint you will see the original color.

WTH!!! All white??? That's not very original!!! If you do find the original gel, you will not be able to sand it off. You need some BIG time reading/learning on fiberglass.

We are always around to help BUT, you need to keep us informed. Plus, here on CCfan, we like to keep things original. Please, why all white?? Hopefully you aren't planing on sticking later decals on the hull sides!! That will ruin the value of the boat!! Trust me!!!

If the gauges are in a straight line it is a 87 model. The 88 has the same layout as the 89 with the gauges in a more scrambled position on either side. Can you supply us with the HIN number? We can then tell you exactly what year and month it was built.

If you do have the 1:1.23 trans. From some testing we have done a 470 prop would be well suited to a loaded wakeboard boat.
If you're going through hell, keep going

After wet sanding my Excel, I don't think you need to worry about going through the original gel unless your using a grinder. I have a couple of spots about half the size of a BB that are black, I think that's what is under the colored gel. I also strongly suggest you make it a winter project, it's miserable enough without the heat.
