Just pulled some bad gas out of an ATV ~ thought I'd share a pic for the rest to see what it looks like....
Best I can tell it is lots of moisture and phase seperation. |

I thought maybe you just had too many beans when I read the title.
That is some nasty looking stuff. How long had it been sitting in the atv? |

Yuck. Did that have Sta-bil in it or was it just plain gas? That stuff on the bottom is what gunks up carbs and fuel lines if the gas sits for months.
I actually poured some stuff that looked like that out of my 1993 tank last week. The gas on the top, the clear stuff, I siphoned out and it actually ran through my car with no problems. But when I picked up the tank and poured out the remaining gallon of gas last week it looked really yellow, like dark urine (sorry to be gross, but everybody will know what I mean). Needless to say, that gallon didn't go into any cars. I'm going to take it to a recycling place this weekend. |

Just less then 1 yr. It seems that tanks that are direct vented to the atmosphere are more subject to moisture.
Wide mouth Ball Jar ~ Seems to be one of the few small items left that is still MADE in the USA. |

I found some good info re ethanol and gas.
The worst thing you can do is leave a tank with a little gas in it. That allows more air/moisture into the tank and just a little gas to hold the moisture. Once it reaches the saturation point " phase separation occurs, the highly corrosive ethanol/water mixture will settle to the bottom of the tank and remain there even after fresh fuel is added in the spring. The only way to remedy the problem would then be to drain the tank and add fresh gasoline. The best way to avoid phase separation over the winter is to leave the tank full (95-percent full to allow for expansion) so that there is less moist air in the tank, less space for condensation to collect". http://www.boatus.com/seaworthy/ethanolwinter.asp http://www.boatus.com/seaworthy/ethanol.asp |
