1. Can anyone confirm the size hose and the length for the various sections on my 1984 SN2001 with 351? Along with other silly questions? See the pics for arrows as I am probably using the wrong lingo.
2. Belt sizes and best belts to use? 3. Pertronix conversion recommended and which kit to get? 4. Plastic elbows on manifold leak a little, replace with brass? 5. Plastic breaker cover is melted, is it available? 6. Pitot assemblies are old and brittle. what to replace with? 7. Plug wires, correct size and source? 8. Impeller part and where does it go, yea dumb question, sorry. 9. Valve cover gaskets for 351. From the list is may sound like my motor is trashed, but it is not. It runs great, just want to replace all the wear stuff so I do not worry. I have looked on sites like skidim.com but it is not perfectly clear on a lot of parts and the manual does not list parts either. Thanks for the help. |

7.) I got a plug wire set, similar to this, except mine happened to be yellow: 8 mm plug wires. You can get the 7mm wires as well, but the 8s are supposedly a little better. Just check to make sure they fit your 351.
8.)I like this Impeller kit cause it comes with paper gaskets and the rubber ring gasket. They go in that little pump that looks like a tiny power steering pump that's closest to the viewer in your second picture. There's a lot of literature out there. I found this article helpful and it happens to be a Sherwood as well. I think most everything else you mention is available on skidim etc., just have to poke around a bit. 3. I know others have set the Pertronix isn't such a great thing. No personal experience. My boat came with a Prestolite breakerless. |

Bri892001, thanks for the help. I saw those blue wires and was not sure, but they are ford blue so I guess they are correct. The article did help a lot. Question tho, the did not mention the paper gaskets. Do you use those along with the O ring?
I will hold on the Pertonix, seems to run well as is. |

I see that Nautique parts source sells belts for PCM, anyone know if it makes a difference? I also see PCM brand hoses around. Better to stay original? Also, still need help confirming the sizes and lengths needed.

You know, I don't know if the paper gaskets are really necessary. There are kits that don't have them, just the rubber o-ring. That's the kit I I used and it didn't leak after, so I'm sticking with it
But yeah, I got that kit that has the paper ones too and I used both the rubber o-ring and one of the papers. The kit comes with multiple paper gaskets, but you'll only need one for your specific pump. I think if you poke around the Ski Dim Premolded Hoses Page you'll find most of what you're looking for. Worth giving them a call. There's also a belt kit for the PCM 351s, you can get it a couple places. Not sure on original vs. aftermarket. I think if you buy premolded hoses, belts, or impellers from Skidim, Nautiqueparts etc., they'll basically be PCM or Sherwood anyway. PCM used Sherwood for the raw water pump. |

Another couple of stupid questions. What is the thing below the fuel pump, a gas filter and if so doe is need service? And why are the belts spraying rubber crap on my engine cover?

In regard to hoses, for my PCM Ford 351 I just ordered two 4 foot lengths of the 1" to replace some of the smaller water hoses and one one foot length of the 1 3/4 inch to replace the large water hoses. Tell Vince at skidim.com or cc parts on here what motor you have and they will set you up with what you need.
The fue/water separator is located under the fuel pump. You may have the spin off filter type. You change these every 100 hours You may need to unbolt the whole thing and put it in a vice to remove the spin off filter. I ordered a Wix fuel /water separator replacement filter for mine. Rich |

I believe that is a fuel filter, not sure as I don't have that particular type on my boat.
Jeez, that is weird with the belts. I'm guessing one of them is slipping and that's the fragments coming off. Could also be that something such as the alternator is creating too much drag for some reason, or maybe they're miss-aligned. Are you sure it's rubber? The only other thing I'm throwing out there is staining from the exhaust manifold elbow leak you mentioned. Maybe a little exhaust is getting out with the water. I'd check for proper belt tension, curious to see what others have to say on that. |

My belts were a little loose, but that stuff is sort of a rubbery oily substance. There is also build up on the base of the water pump and backs of the pullies. I cleaned it off once, but just adjusted the belts and they were loose, so I will clean again and see. They are in good alignment bc I checked that. I do have a few minor oil leaks, but I have never even had to add oil to that motor all last season. Is that normal?

Where does that 1 3/4" hose go? There are three hoses going off the top of the motor, they all look like 1". Is that correct? Then the one larger hose, which may be the one you are referring to. I bet that is a water separator. I will ask Vince about it. Thanks |

Large 1 3/4" hoses go on the elbow one 6" to the thermostat housing and 2 1/2" one to the circulation pump on my 351 motor. The hoses going from the themostat to the exhaust manifolds are 1" on mine. Fuel/ water separator has fuel lines in and out going to it. Hoses going to the raw water pump are also 1". Measure the inside diameter only.

Double check that the circulation pump pulley is aligned with the balancer pulley. If your circ pump has been replaced there is a good chance that it will not line up with the other pulleys to the tune of an eighth inch. That would cause your belts to degrade rapidly and probably make a mess.
All of the water hose is 1" except the 1 3/4" that feeds the circulation pump. You should be able to measure those distances pretty easy. The tolerances are pretty large on the hoses. |

The problem is my boat is at the lake and I am not! I was trying to get the parts ordered so I could take them with me to do the work. I should have brought the boat home over the winter, but money was tight and I did not want to work on it much over the winter. I thought aboumeasuring it over the weekend, but did not. That is why I was trying to get measurments for the web

That makes sense. If it ever stops raining tomorrow I can try to get measurements for you. You should be able to get the hose from any napa, etc. no problem on your way to the lake. Why are you replacing all the hoses? Didn't you say you were going to do some painting. In that case I could see maybe replacing the hoses but I would not take the old ones off if they are not leaking and you are not painting. Looks like you have the plastic elbows on your exhaust manifolds. Broke mine trying to get the old hoses off, then you have to go to brass. Stuff starts to compound sometimes, when well enough should have been left alone. Tell us more about what is going on.

Keeganino, I hear what you are saying. One side of me says it ain't broke, don't mess with it. The anal side of me wants it to look as good as it runs. The hose feel solid with the exception of one of the lower hoses feels a little spongy. I am in the middle of two full on rotisserie car restorations and have another car that I am dealing with on the road so I truly need to do nothing but enjoy this thing. I was just thinking that most of this stuff could be done over the weekend and will make the boat more reliable. I have never replaced the impeller or the hoses. The belts are only one season old. No idea about the plugs. The clear fuel sight hose is nasty looking. The block is rusty and dirty. I guess I should close the lid and pop a cold one and drive it like I stole it?

Man at this point I would say ride it. Supposed to be in the upper 80's here all weekend and I would guess you are looking at a similar forecast. Give you a project to look forward to in the fall. I have many projects left to do on the Skier but at this point in the season I am raring to go.

Regarding the the rubber dust on your engine and motor box cover. I had a similar problem. First was to make sure the pulleys were were aligned and in the same plane ( using shims )so the belt is not rubbing more on one edge. It was better but was still getting some dust. I checked the pulleys where the belts contacted the pulleys and there were some rough spots. Using automotive sandpaper I sanded them down using 200 then 400, then 800 grit.
After the sanding and alignment the dust has gone away. |
